Film on in the background, and someone has had their house burglarised! Do they mean burgled? Also heard Perry Mason referring to the murder victim as the decedent, new one on me.
Lots of words are 'ised' these days, yes that pushes my button. Using the words yup and yep in the written word does too.
Sorry if this one's been mentioned already but "super" really irritates me when used in place of "really" or "very". eg. "It's super difficult". Especially when older people use it thinking it makes them sound hip & trendy.
And "So" as the first word in a sentence when replying to a question. Aaaaaargh!!!
Clay soil - Cheshire/Derbyshire border. I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful
Similar to one we get on the media here at the moment so not sure if it would be well known in the UK but almost every news program here in Ireland at the moment is asking the people of the country to cut down on "socialization". I had got the impression years back that "socialization" was the process by which people were tuned into fitting into society in a particular way but now it seems just a more official sounding way and less offensive way of saying for us to do less socializing. And while I mention the word "socialization" why is it that every word that made sense spelled with in an s in it previously now needs to be spelt with a z so it is not getting highlighted as a spelling mistake?
'Foster' and 'sponsor' and 'adopt'. As in every second TV charity advert asking you to 'foster' or 'sponsor' or 'adopt' an animal. If there are only 300 animal 'X' left in the world, and 300 people 'foster/sponsor/adopt' that animal at £3 a month, that is only a total of £10,800 a year. How on earth could that pay for your TV advert, let alone the £100,000 a year salaries of your directors!
In a recent issue of ‘The Garden’ the RHS spoke of something being “gifted”. In a light hearted manner I chided them over the use of this buzz word and got a po-faced reply saying gifted was perfectly acceptable as a synonym for given.
By return, “I don’t doubt for an instance the validity of to gift as a synonym for to give. It is simply that, going forward, I am loving it if you guys were super careful in avoiding clichés in your carefully curated magazine. Not too big an ask, I hope.”
They still did not engage in the spirit of the discussion.
