Accents , glottal stops and dropped aitches and the like don't bother me at all. It's part of the  English language's rich tapestry. I think it's a great shame that a genuine cockney accent has all but disappeared. I'm sure this has happened throughout the British Isles.
What peeves me are the malapropisms and  careless misuse of the English language to the extent that the meaning is lost. We are losing the subtlety and nuance that picking the correct synonym affords.

  • I count myself lucky to have grown up surrounded by a much richer and older language...whatever happens to English doesn't trouble me one bit. Remember an English tutor in Athens calling it the language of commerce 😉

If you take exception to hoover, there are many more trademark names that are genericised and should also be given the swerve. Here are just a few: Elastoplast, EpiPen, Sellotape, Cashpoint, Biro, Plasticine, Velcro, Pot Noodle, Tannoy, Thermos, Jacuzzi.

B3, I hope you have a Hoover vacuum cleaner then. I have started telling folk that I "shark" my floors.  BenCotto, I have always said flask, I do now actually have a fancy (expensive) Thermos flask. Pot noodle... now you are swearing! I don't know how anyone could eat that muck. You will be pleased to know, the rest are definitely given the "swerve" here!

I have a Henry hoover at the moment. I have had Dyson hoovers and a vax hoover in the past. I also have a hand held hoover and that's not made by Hoover either.

Not pronouncing 'h' and then saying 'haitch' for 'h'. I blame the French.

  • B3, you're just trying to annoy me now, aren't you! Am pleased to see Argos call Henry a vacuum cleaner. You have had so many they are obviously rubbish, might I suggest a shark vacuum cleaner,it has brilliant suction. My youngest son (rapid cycle bipolar, OCD) bought an upright shark this year,(on my suggestion)he has cream carpets and is delighted with it. It is so powerful it lifts the carpet.
