Someone on R4 yesterday was talking about "the optics of Liz Truss's new cabinet"... Had to look it up. Apparently, according to the Cambridge dictionary, it means "the public's opinion and understanding of a situation after seeing it as the media shows [sic] it, and the possible political effects of this".
Not a word I'll be using any time this century.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
Grrrr, just seen an item reviewed in a trashy newspaper, with the cheery words that not only is it a great product, but it is currently ‘ on sale’. Since when has that Americanism been acceptable here in the UK? Surely on sale, just means it is available to buy. If they are going to advertise things in the UK, they should at least use an unambiguous phrase such as reduced in price, even ‘in the sale’ would imply you might be getting a bargain!
