That would be fair enough if the subscriber only areas did not have irrelevant adverts but they do

You don’t have to have a subscription to access this forum, or the general GW website, it is FREE to use. But they have to fund the technical team to run it and other overheads, that’s why it has adverts.
If you read my original post I was referring to reading an article, not reading a post in the forum.

I wouldn’t say you have to ‘pay’ for the Secret Garden bits either @Dovefromabove, it’s just an additional bonus if you have a subscription. In fact, I haven’t had a subscription to the magazine for 4 years but can still access it 😊

If the article is in the Secret Garden section, then yes you need to be a subscriber ... but it's quite a new 'perk for subscribers' not part of the magazine subscription per se.

However, there are loads of other parts of the GW website that are free to all, and they're all funded by the advertising.

That's illogical ...... the paper magazine we pay for has adverts.

Doesn't make it more difficult to access the articles though does it

I phrased that clumsily ... as you've probably seen now I went on to describe it as 'a perk' for those who pay subscriptions.

Actually, I don’t look at SG very often, think they just forgot to cancel the link on my account when I cancelled my subscription and I wouldn’t really miss it if they cottoned on. I agree your point of view is illogical, the mag is choc full of ads. Ads are a part of life. Everywhere. You have to pay for the privilege of not having them, e.g. BBCTV. If it irks you so much, don’t subscribe to the mag or don’t look at SG.
