DON'T grow perennials from seed unless you have plenty of cold frame space. What's the point of beautifying your garden if you have rows of ugly plastic pots all over the place which you constantly have to water? Yes buying C9s is more expensive, but the time you gain, and the garden space you get back, has to be worth it. (Yep this is advice directed at myself).

Don't assume that plants will self seed/spread because others say they do. I am eagerly awaiting geums, hollyhocks, foxgloves and many others to self seed/spread and nothing. I am now trying to be more patient weeding as I think nothing has a chance to self seed - except things I don't want.Â
And make sure you label your seeds/cuttings/plugs/bare roots with some sort of indelible marker as otherwise you have absolutely no idea what you are doing. A coding scheme which you have to refer back to makes life more tricky than it needs to be- 'N2' doesn't mean much months later
