Have to agree about orange in general but it worked really well in that tiny space and just imagine the effectiveness (not) of yellow or pink or blue in that light.

I don't understand bars in gardens.  They seem to take up space which could be used for climbers and it's not as if any we've seen so far on this show have been a mile away from a kitchen or dining room.  I assume people know what trays are for.

  • Ive never got the garden bar thing either. It just seems a faff to set it all up and take it all down to me but I don't use my garden as an entertaining space as often as others.

Ive seen some clever ‘shed’ ones that have a hatch where a window should be which also serves as a storage area which seems a better idea to me.

We currently have a terrace at the back of the house, right outside the kitchen door, but it's on the north side so great in high summer but not so good between the autumn and spring equinoxes.   Dead easy to transport drinks and food out tho.

One day, I'll make another in a sunnier spot and maybe with a fire pit but definitely no bar so we can sit out and eat and drink in comfort all year, especially when we can have people round again and friends come to stay.

Basically it’s designating an area for a particular function, which has value, in this case that function being getting pissed - or at least it was when I was a bit younger.

Other people might question why we set aside an area for composting, or potting, for example.

If that's the only outside space and they like entertaining but not gardening, then I can see that the bar might be good for them. But for myself I would probably want more plants and less "stuff" - maybe a ferny grotto.

    Stating the obvious @JoeX.

I'm just questioning their value, practicality and aesthetics in a gardening context, being someone who likes plants and wildlife and gardening and, unless entertaining, rarely sits down in it tho I'm planning places to do just that for when I get older and more doddery.

  • They also added so much tat to the shelves of the "bar" (sorry, lovely ornaments) - what is the point?  The next day it'll probably be raining and they'll be dashing out and bringing it all back indoors, probably to get dumped on a table somewhere looking a complete mess.  I didn't like it much, the only good thing was that he kept the potted plants.
  • Objects on a shelf (many were fine with being wet) is surely better than the current onslaught for fake plants in outdoor spaces. Thanks heavens we are all different and can do as we please 😂

I have objects all over the place - usually rusty bird sculptures of the Zimbabwe variety - and have no problem with that.

It's the idea of having glasses and bottles permanently in the garden when you could be displaying plants!   For me, bottles in a garden are for making walls or water features.

  • @amancalledgeorge ok yes you have a point- there's a house near me with fake roses and violas out the front and it really irritates me. I always make a point of thinking to myself "oh look how well their roses are doing in this 1°c weather!"
