Thanks for that, I couldn't help wondering if the photos suggested a more shadier environment, because I intend moving mine to an area which has plenty reflective light, but not much direct sunlight. As regards support in future years, it is going beside a wall with a trellis attached so that should take care of any future shooting.

...I think you're looking for something other than a rose for this... most roses are not evergreen, the few that are wouldn't be hardy in Aberdeenshire,  and for winter interest in roses we would choose those that bear hips, but these are not usually suitable for arch growing as a feature except the very largest types..

...perhaps a winter flowering honeysuckle, something like that?..

@LToby @Marlorena How about ‘Alberic Barbier’? Too large?

..when I grew Alberic Barbier, it did nothing for the first summer, not even a single bloom cluster, then in late summer it threw out a rambling 20 foot plus cane which went on forever, and totally threw me at the time... so you would have to keep that in check... really it's a rampant rambler only suited to large areas, and no winter interest as such, as you would be forever pruning everything off to keep it contained....

..for a 6 or 7 foot arch, with winter interest?..  I'm not sure how I could reconcile that one to be honest, but I don't like to put anyone off their plans, so up to you on that one.. but it wouldn't be a rose for a quiet life...

^ go back in the summer and nick a few of their cabbages....  jokes aside, really sorry about all that.. hope it works out in the end for you.. I was looking forward to seeing how the pond develops..

'Eustacia Vye' has just been released in the States and is already 'sold out'...

@Mr. Vine Eye  - how about we rosaphiles get together and go up to your allotment and have a word with your thugs? We could put it out on Twitter and get a fair army of very unimpressed gardeners wielding bamboo canes, dibbers and pointy plant labels. I'm not sure it's an experience the thieves would ever forget. They wouldn't be able to look at courgette ever again without wincing.

Apologies, that last post was a real downer and completely off topic.

I went back to try and remove it but had gone past the time limit for editing.

I won’t post anything else about it unless there’s some positive news!

I'm sure nobody minds venting ones feelings occasionally, and we've been following the progress of your allotment since its inception... we are community and the weather is terrible, so we're not going to see any nice roses until Nollie's garden takes off...

I think a lot of people would have just gone in there and retrieved what they knew to be theirs, because officialdom never seems to get anywhere much these days, and my husband used to embarrass me with his lack of diplomacy... but I think for me, I would draw a line under it, put it down to experience, move on and continue with my plans undeterred... but be wary of putting anything down I wasn't afraid to lose..

    ..just my tuppence..
