I notice that Gardeners' World have done some sort of bird survey which has found that pigeons and seagull are pushing small birds out of gardens. I'm my garden, admittedly there has been a doubling in the population. We now have 4. I see seagulls in the sky sometimes - never on the ground. There are at least three large flocks of sparrows, various tits, black caps, goldfinches, robins , blackbirds etc.Β What nonsense - here anyway.
I belong to another website, someone posted on there asking what lockdown rules people have broken, (me, no none) you wouldn't believe what some people have done, they "feel" driving 35 miles for excercise is perfectly fine, having parties, 6 different households, no-one feels guilty, they also claim they have killed no-one, I don't have any problem with someone who forgot for a couple of seconds and hugged their 80 year old mother on their birthday, I told them because of their attiudes the lockdowns would go on and on and on!!
Last time we bought carpets (14 years ago in West Yorks), they were supplied in metric widths and imperial lengths.Β Very confusing...
Back in the days when the country was moving to the metric system, I worked as a Quantity Surveyor.Β The building trade wasn't noted for its forward thinking attitude, and architects weren't much better.Β We used to get plans in with building measurements using the metric system, but timber in particular specified in imperial sizes.Β The end results was the likes of 40 metres of 4" x 2" timber.
When I built my polytunnels: "take the 2" xΒ 1/4" batten and fix with a 45mm nail" They're made in multiple of 3feet widths, and multiples of 8 feet lenghts, but the plans show the distance as 2.438m. I called them and asked why they don't just make it multiples of 1m width and multiples of 2.5m lenghts.Β " we will one day "

If I had to take a wild guess I'd say Mumsnet? I've had the misfortune of reading some content from there over the years and every time I've left with my faith in humanity a little more diminished.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Yes, wild edges, I put how do you know you havent killed anyone, because that was their boast, someone put up my comment and said what a horrible thing to say.Β There are posts on there from a lady who has been in a ventilator, I know what you mean, I joined up quite genuinly wanting varied advice, I cannot bare the use of the C word on there, because I signed up I get e-mails and some things are quite interesting.Someone was complaining about their 22 year old step son farting someone put their Husband did that (as did I on here) well they reckon its grounds for divorce, where oh where did they find these perfect, helpfull "windfree" men!!

The problem is that many machines were manufactured decades ago and are still going strong.Β They were created to manufacture items in imperial sizes and it would cost a fortune to replace them all.
I think it was the same year as Decimilisation ( 1971 ) that out teacher said " we're not going to be using feet and inches now. We're going to use centimetres and metres"Β I guess nobody under the age of 50 has much concept of " feet and inches "Β
