I don't believe any child should go hungry. I do believe there are some pretty irresponsible parents out there, who prioritise non essentials over putting nutritious food on the table. For those on benefits, the benefits have not changed, they got free school meals during term time and had to use the child benefit to feed them in the holidays.  Those with jobs before the covid crisis are the worst hit if they are being furloughed. they probably have mortgages to be paid based on previous earnings, didn't get free school meals for the kids before, and wouldn't be eligible for extra handouts now.  They were just about managing before, but not now.   Food banks are  doing a roaring trade. The local helping hands group are doing food parcels for those that cannot get out.  For those that cannot cope, maybe there needs to be someone sit down with them and help them budget.  It is not reasonable for staff in shops to be threatened because food vouchers can  not be used on fags or booze, but apparently can be loaded onto smartphones.

When free baby milk used to given out on vouchers, we used to have problems with people  wanting other things instead, progressing to bringing the cans back for a refund of cash,(we started marking the cans) then they would sell the cans on for half the price to other mothers who didn't get free milk.
These days you can look on ebay and see many items obviously supplied on prescription, being sold on for far less than the NHS paid for it.

Maybe all child benefit should be stopped, all children provided with a free school uniform, and all children fed at school free.

Why is it so difficult to have an opt-out option on all benefits that the beneficiary has control over (in case their circumstances change)? But knowing this bunch, Boris' software bods would charge £1billion (plus expenses, lunch and travel allowances) to make the change, negating all the benefit for decades.

    Shear madness.

It's even more worrying to think somebody in a senior position at Tesco thought this was a good idea??!

I thought it was going to be about sheep @SydRoy - when you said 'shear' and it's Wales  ;)
They just mentioned it on the radio news. I think some people need educating  :/

However - I did laugh when they reported yesterday that police turned a family round at the Welsh border and sent them packing back to Sussex. I have no sympathy whatsoever.
That's the problem, right there.  The 'assumption' that everyone in the UK has the same guidelines. They apparently were aware, but clearly didn't care.  No respect.

Talking of no respect,i have walked out of work half an hour into my six hour shift. Shouted at from the first minute i go onto the shop floor, the last straw being called an a***hole because i apparently made someone late as i was not giving her preferential treatment over the other eleven customers who were also waiting with red lights flashing, each waiting to be served, each one expecting by some miracle that they'd be served before the next person.
What's happened to the 'we're all in this together' attitude that was reported on when the lockdowns began? And why aren't supermarkets protecting their staff?
I'm not sure i can take anymore.

You have my sincere sympathy @Klink. My older daughter has had several incidents like this, one of them leading to a severe panic attack. Fortunately a nice chap intervened and got a manager. The woman also said something offensive, which I won't go into here. Par for the course.
She works for a well known s'market, and they're pretty good in there - banning people who are regular offenders. It's dreadful the way some people behave.
Have you got someone in human resources, or a manager, you can talk to?

@Fairygirl , I've spoken with HR and was told i would have help rota'd on.It's not happened as yet.I'm just seething as well as being upset.I'm no spring chicken and just don't expect to be verbally abused on every shift. It's getting worse by the day.Funnily enough,we've taken on a lot of youngsters during the pandemic and having watched them do the same job as me,they seem to be treated less harshly when it's busy.Maybe the customers think with age comes better service..

I just think some people are hideous on a regular basis, and they're being shown up even more just now.  :/
It's very hard for lots of folk, but it isn't acceptable when they think it's ok to abuse people who are doing a valuable job. I've seen how some customers treat staff - as though they're something unsavoury they've trodden on. I hope you get some resolution - sooner rather than later.
Both my girls say it's that thing of 'leaning over them to reach stuff' that they hate. I worry about them constantly, especially as they both have issue of their own to deal with.
