@poppyfield64 ...I'm delighted you are pleased with that choice of rose...
@peteS ...the trade off is, if you plant the graft above soil level it could encourage rootstock suckers, but if you plant the graft below soil level, it will encourage suckering by Charles de Mills, so yes in that case, new ones will be that rose... would you want any more to grow elsewhere? if on their own roots, they will take over your garden...
'Tottering by Gently' is now starting its next flush... massive number of buds to open.. ..I have it with this clematis.. I have 3 Munstead Wood's and they may be leaving me this autumn... but it's hard not to like these dark blooms when they appear... the structure of this rose is its downfall.. ..the rose in this picture is 'Amethyst Star' [aka Special Brother]... and it's wonderful actually..
..some more on the above rose... the blooms are sweetly scented, insect friendly, the foliage is large, healthy and olive green.. it forms large floribunda heads of buds, 30 or more to a cluster.. and to top it all, it's totally thornless above the lowest 6 inches.. It's also very vigorous, throwing up frequent basals.. the blooms fade to a purple/slate grey colour, but not as offputting for me as, say, Blue For You.. A top rose from northern British breeder Ronnie Rawlins, of Huddersfield...
This Tantau rose 'Eisvogel' is also a winner for me.. the centre of the blooms do turn an apricot/slightly orange colour, which may jar with the outer pink, but I don't worry about that.. the blooms are also sweetly Old Rose scented... just wonderful, and the foliage is perfect... dark and leathery... shapely, rounded growth, with upright strong stems.. I am keeping this one for sure..
It's taken me 2 days to download and update to the new Windows 10 version 2004 released recently.. it takes hours and hours.. however, it was worth it, because I have found that the internet moves so much quicker now, everything loads 10 times faster it seems... so a big improvement.. I also like the Collections feature, whereby you can collect favourite websites together in one place..
Nice and hot today... 'Achnatherum calamagrostis'... besides roses, one of my best plants.. ..especially when the wind blows... Salvia gregii 'Red Swing'... 'Carmen Wurth'.. 'Scented Garden'... 'Eisvogel'...
Do you have a preference for dark moody roses @Marlorena? The only one I've got is 'Blue for You' and I'm never quite sure whether I like it or not. It does look good when the dark purple bearded irises, the lilac wisteria and clematis 'Crystal Fountain'(also lilac) all bloom together in the same border but that doesn't happen often!
@Lizzie27 ..No, not at all Lizzie, I tend to prefer bright roses, but the occasional dark ones all fit in.. I really like all colours with roses, and don't mind clashes... ...I did not enjoy Blue For You for 2 reasons... it became so awfully thorny and the fading blooms turned a weird kind of light grey, like pale slate... nice scent though..like cinnamon I thought.. You have some interesting plants in your Bath garden Lizzie... I have seen it on the gallery threads..
