@Marlorena@Mr. Vine Eye my pots are of varying sizes really..the diameter ranges from 35cm to 59cm (59cm ones have my climbing roses in them) and depth ranges from 35 to 56cm (again 56cm ones with climbing roses).. it was so hard to find exactly 45x45cm or18x18 inches pots.. like Mr Vine Eye said they’re all either too narrow or too shallow. I wonder say for my roses in 35cm deep pots.. would that 10cm from the ideal depth make a huge difference with regards to whether the rose is likely get root bound?
I’ve found some plastic ones recently online and there’s actually a much wider range of dimensions and more importantly they’re way cheaper than the ones I’ve been buying so far.. I’ve been paying 25 quid on average for each pot.. which is worth the rose itself! But then I agree they tend to look more artificial and less decorative
On another note.. These two cheeky ones (Boscobel and Munstead Wood) have been testing my patience.. very slow progress over the last week despite the very sunny and warm weather.. I’ve even tried talking to them..
@Fire, lovely to see your red roses, I’m right jealous, since mine do get bleached out in the sun! The foliage on Barkarole is lovely, look forward to seeing the blooms.
I know what you mean about Gertrude Jekyll, @edhelka, the first flush is glorious and is the only rose I can really smell strongly, but pretty poor after that. I was interested to hear Monty saying last night that his sense of smell is dodgy too, I’m clearly in good company! Here is my GJ just coming into the first flush:
A few of my new roses (again!). I’m just so excited about this new bed, only 2/3rds constructed as yet as I still have a wall to build up at the back, if I can ever get hold of some mortar and if the bolts for the fence to support the climbers ever arrive. I will post some photos of the whole thing when it is finally finished, but don’t hold your breath!

...beautiful @Nollie I like the Alliums too... wonderful roses... when I had GJ I found it was terrific in May/June and August.. @jonathanmichell23 ..they're looking ok, bit holey.. nothing much to worry about... I now remember why your Silas is ahead of mine, because you got it potted, so a larger older plant..if I recall correctly... so that's my excuse and I am unanimous in that... ..all looking good.. @Mr. Vine Eye Yeah.. B and M used to do big pots, plastic, but I remember some being 3 foot by 3 foot deep... these are perfect for roses, if you can tolerate the plastic look.. I could, but not everyone would like that..
@celcius_kkw Adrian... 35cm will do for I should think a couple of years, maybe 3 with top dressing, but it's likely to shorten the time when decisions might have to be made.. see how it goes... no stress right now...
here's my Vanessa Bell today.. I thought I would get a bloom this morning, but not to be.. it's in a 40cm x 45cm [15 x 18 inches] lightweight resin pot… 3 years in this pot and it's 4 foot x almost 4 foot across.. and I've no intention of repotting it for at least another 2 years, if I keep it that long... great rose, but I do like to change things...
Incidentally, this is a good example of phototropism - growing towards the light - wherein the left side that's east facing, towards the morning sun, is taller than the right side, which is west facing and not so many buds..
..is that your Lady Waterlow?... the bloom looks huge..
@Fire ..you asked for a red hybrid tea recommendation earlier, yet I notice you have what looks to be a very good one in Barkarole... I like the foliage very much... would they like that one perhaps?..
My back garden last Friday, roses are Penelope on the fence , with a potted apricot rose underneath it, (new bareroot, name unknown, doing well), 2 roses in front of hedge, GJ and Winchester Cathedral, (Margaret Merrill on the left, just out of sight, all 3 in bloom today), Royal William on obelisk with Countess of Lovelace clematis, then a long shot with Penelope on left and RW on the right.
I'm a bit worried about the new rose in that metal pot in this hot sunshine. I'm keeping it well watered - would rather not have used that pot but only one left that was big enough. It's coming out as soon as I see the colour of the blooms! Four of the new cheap bareroots are doing well in pots, all have small buds. I'm promised Old English blooms but will wait and see. Sadly the yellow rose I planted in the ground where an old rose had been, despite digging out the old soil and using Rootgrow, has failed to thrive. I'm not surprised really but had hoped it would do better.

I wasn't sure if that would be happy in a smallish pot. I have ordered a Deep Secret now for my friend. It's a very different shaped flower, which she will like. She had an Ena that died. I've ordered a DS for myself too and a Papa Meilland to under plant the Guinee.
I've just seen some buff tailed bumbles on my reds which is a delightful surprise. Bees are not keen on red flowers.
