… christ Adrian, that's a shocker... but thanks for answering the shout out and letting us all know how you are.. I hope this gives you immunity and I can only admire you for thinking of your roses during this nightmare... ...I do think we were all seriously misled initially when they told us that 80 percent of people only get mild symptoms... I don't call what you had mild and so many seem to get the severe form... and I'm not at all confident I would recover from that, nor my husband... we've both ordered masks arriving next week for what it's worth..
Great to see you back, and your roses are looking good too... don't rush to respond, we'll all talk with you again very soon.. very best wishes... oh and I love those Lupins too. !
My Pilgrim is in its fourth year and has suddenly decided to go for it, which is good to see. The flowers are way too double/triple for me, but I'm glad it has decided to live. No more spindly, underwhelming growth. I hope my other roses will feel encouraged. We're in it for the long haul, as they say.
Crawl, stall, haul, brawl, or whatever the saying is.
@Marlorena, yes you did recommend Burgundy Ice to me and pointed me in the right direction for many others, thank you. I am still hankering after one of your other recommendations, Ivor’s Rose, but not risking international deliveries just now - maybe next season!
@celcius_kkw, so sorry you caught the dreaded CV, Adrian, best wishes for your recovery.

Hello, I have a bit of a problem with black spot on my roses. This year I am trying pruning less (tried in autumn), giving a rose liquid feed once a month. Is there anything else I could try to help? I dug up some yellow roses that were covered.
I have a GJ and Old Lad David Austin roses, new last year. Something called Inspiration (looks orange on the catalogue, not really, in the real world, unless they sent something’s else). A Banksii (not sure of the spelling), Yellow climbing thornless, this is clear of the black spot! A couple of others that have black spot, sometimes every third leaf, so pretty sad if I remove the affected leaves.
Any suggestions very much appreciated. Oh and they are in mixed borders, I planted some salvias near them, as I read something about it helping with resisting blackspot. There are also some alliums around, again in the hope that they may help.
@Marlorena. Good morning to you all, especially Celsius-kkw so glad you have made it. Marlorena, could you advise us please about city of York. It was growing under the polypropylene cover where we sit. Had to move it on top of the cover as the green flies etc. Kept dropping in our food. As you can see it’s now grown shoots with a rose bud on every one, about 50cm high all along the branches which are 3m long. When it has flowered the idea is to cut them off down to two leaves. Will these then have another flush of flowers or just stand till next year. Is this a bad idea. What do you think will happen to the long branches next year. Thank you so much for your excellent advice. Valerie
@zarahbruce Hello Zarah... I hope others will help you out here as I'm not always the best to advise on disease issues, as I tend towards a different view, but what I will say is, your roses are fairly new, they are all great choices, and they will all improve with age, in every way, including disease resistance... I don't know Inspiration, never heard of that one... but stick with them, I've had shocking black spotters in the first year, and later hardly a blemish... Photos are always helpful for further advice, as we can't really see what you've got there... thanks and do hope you will show some of your roses when in flower... your Banksia should be by now?...
@valerieroberts hi Valerie... first of all I've never grow your rose so I can only tell you from what I've read about it... it will only flower once.. is that your experience so far? it seems unlikely you will see later blooms, maybe a sparse one or two.. So you have 2 choices with this rose... it will set nice orange hips if you leave all the stems on and don't deadhead them, then during the winter you can prune each of those long lateral canes right back to just 2 buds off the main framework... Or, if you are not bothered about the hips, you can prune it right back, the lateral shoots and some of the main framework if you wish, after it's finished flowering..
