I agree with the frilly similarity to Easy Does It @newbie77, but the colour was neon orange in the summer, admittedly more faded like @JessicaS mystery rose by the end of the season. Mind you by then mine had not a single leaf, unlike the healthy specimen in Jessica's photo.
I have started the defoliation. The new bare root roses from this autumn are all sprouting so I wanted to prevent spores from all the still-leafy plants spreading. So I've now done that and pruned all my potted roses. A selection in the pic, excuse the labels, I still have to make more discreet ones. If somebody wanted to play a prank on me removing the labels would keep me guessing now that I've got 22 similar pots.
  • Hello all , got my TCL delivery today ,
left to right 2x chandos beauty , juliachild/ab fab and then easy does it. They were relatively dry , so I have sprayed them and rolled them in newspaper ( individually) and put them back in the box for now. some sand coming off as i unwrapped .
Some questions please if anyone could help:
    1) A few tiny leaves ( more sprouts than leaves ) -- can i just leave these on? also there is the odd tiny twig at the top of stems which looks to have had some dieback ( ie green twig ending in a black bit for last half inch or so -- do i cut this dieback off and leave the tiny sprouts/leaves on ( and pull off any other grown leaves i see?)
2)some of the roots have white roots emerging from the brown mass -- assume this is fine whether they have them or not ( CB doesnt , the other two do)
    3) saw an earlier post that trimming roots by up to a third  to fit pots is ok, assume i plant so that the bulge/graft is under the soil level.
4 ) most imp -- i dont have rootgrow to hand, plus super cold out so can these just stay wrapped in newspaper and their black binbag in a ( cold , dark but frost free - basically badly heated extension room) until saturday when it should be a tiny bit warmer and hopefully i will have the mycorrhizal fungi?

    Thank you!!!

I just googled easy does it (gosh thats pretty!)- it does look similar, but this one isnt as neon coloured and its only single stem shrub style.  It was a bit pinkier to start with I seem to remember and faded to that sort of apricot colour. I'll take some more of it this summer when its all in bloom - its got lots of little growth nubs on it since I pruned it which is good.  It flowered until about end of October.

...I wanted to answer you quickly on this..

re 1 and 2.. no need to worry about any of that for now.. do it later..
3... yes you can prune roots but only do as much as you need to accommodate the plant..
4... this is very important and why I wanted you to get a quick answer... those roots are now exposed to the air... it's vital you rehydrate those roots in a bucket of water... you can only keep them as they are for a week or so if the packaging has not been opened and they are airtight.. once opened, you will have to do something with them...
...they can stay in water overnight, if it doesn't freeze over, shed? unheated room if nowhere else available?...  then perhaps tomorrow if you can just dig a quick pit outside and put all the roses in the hole, in a bundle together, covering the roots with damp soil.. firm down, and just leave until you're ready.. alternatively, they could stay in the water until Saturday, providing the water doesn't freeze over, so I would bring it in overnight..

I'm due a -3 tonight, so I wouldn't be leaving any bucket of water exposed outside..

  • @Marlorena -- thank you very much for the speedy answer -- I'll get them in a bucket of water now and see if I can manage to plant out on Friday or latest Saturday . Thank you!!!

Eustacia is going to hate me. She took a while to get going this year and I suspect it's because I planted her too close to my crab apple tree so she was suffering from replant sickness. But she improved later on.

I moved her a few weeks ago to a slightly different spot - I had to remove some quite chunky roots that were growing in that spot...which I realised must be from the crab apple so she's probably going to go through the same slow start all over again!

    Poor thing.

..maybe a bit early for that...  I think it's more of a March-March thing with roses...  this might as well drift on through the winter as there won't be much doing...  just my tuppence..

    @Tack
..what potting medium mix do you use for your roses?  you may have said before but I can't remember.. just wondered.. thanks..  they always seem to do so well for you..

Last year cannot be replicated because I used soil from the garden from the bottom of a steep wooded slope (so washed down fine soil in the main), coir (the only thing I could get delivered) and garden compost.
This year the garden soil is replaced by topsoil, also Coir, peatfree MPC and a shovel of vermiculite. I will put a mulch of garden compost on the top in Spring, I've left room in the pots. Fingers crossed this works as I am really hoping to avoid peat. I have a feeling though that the alluvium was the magic ingredient last year. Unfortunately I used it all, it took years to accumulate.
Last year I also used the fertiliser I had, so Tomorite or MiracleGro slow release. I now have DA rose feed. So all in all I may have very different results this year.
