I am enjoying 4 day long holiday at home. Garden is waterlogged and it had been very windy and rainy. This year roses are getting tested how they survive in this soil.
@JessicaS - yes Secret Gardening Club is great, apart from last minute dropping of items from my order without notification, which has happened both times I ordered.
But the plants have been good, there's a lot of variety through the year and they're considerably less expensive than other places.
Especially good for ones that can propagate easily. I got a Gaura for £2.99, some bits snapped off while plantingao I cut them into sections, all of those rooted in a jar of water so I ended up with 5 gaura for £2.99 with no effort at all.
@JessicaS Ebb Tide is a bit bluer than in that picture but not as blue as Rhapsody in Blue. In a pot that rose was one of my best, healthiest performers, definitely my longest flowering.
I have used Secret Gardening club this summer, pretty pleased with most of what I received. Being so small the plants only showed a fraction of what they will become but I haven't lost any yet.
I am thrilled to have received a DA voucher for Christmas, now waiting excitedly to see what their new offerings will be.
Hello rosy folks, hope everyone enjoyed their festive break, regardless of everything.
Despite frosts, some of the roses hadn’t gone into dormancy so I defoliated them. Mainly to deprive the rose slugs of food - yes, still picking the blasted things off, they just haven’t stopped reproducing! Several types appeared for the first time this year, large, hairy and curled. They have proved a real menace so it’s going to be a mammoth task next year to keep them under control and stop them decimating the foliage, especially given the large quantity of new roses I have bought 🙊
However, I couldn’t quite being myself to defoliate one, The Prince, as it’s still producing the odd bloom and has a few buds left to go. Inspecting the underside leaves of one plant is far easier than doing that on 40 tho!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Tack Thank you, that swings it, ive ordered Ebb tide! I chose open arms for my climber based on an earlier recommendation, and ive ordered Lavender Ice as well as im a sucker for the purples and lilacs and that has a beautiful shape and it'll go nicely with Ebb. Trying cottage-memories as they have a good selection and reasonable prices for bare roots.
@Mr. Vine Eye Yes ive had the last minute droppage which is annoying but at least super quick with refunds. Ive been impressed when plants have been lost too (lavenders with grey bits getting rot sigh) - no quibble refunds. Ive just ordered a pink gaura with them actually, I might try popping a bit in a jar too good idea - first year ive tried Gauras (a pretty white) and its beautiful.
They are very easy to propagate! I took cuttings from the cuttings because they were too long - and those then grew roots too. They rooted within a week in spring.
I wanted one called Gaura Lindheimeri Siskiyou Pink - I wasn’t sure if the one that has been listed in the past on SGC is that right one - it’s described as Siskiyou Pink but doesn’t have the Lindheimeri part on the name and it’s described as a larger gaura. Whereas in other places it’s supposedly similar to the smaller White Lindheimeri that I already have I.e. 40cm wide.
I've seen one before in the flesh and really liked the red stems, but I don't have space for a large one.

Love a bargain!
