@Marlorena I just found out about the Chelsea flower show cancellation too, it was going to be my first time going to the show but I guess it couldn’t be helped.. I wouldn’t like to hang out amongst thousands of people anyway given what’s going on..
im well jealous of you guys with rose buds already appearing.. my roses seem to be having a sluggish start this season. They were growing slowly but continuously over winter but seemed to have stunted a little after I pruned them in February. The growth is coming back again but they’re no where near producing buds yet.. I reckon it will be another two months before I get there. How is it possible that given we are all in the same country there’s such a discrepancy in growth rate??? I’m based in the north west which is hardly northern Scotland?! 😕 surely the weather can’t be that different??!
Meanwhile I am keeping myself busy potting up the three varieties of lavender (hidcote, rosea and edelweiss) that I purchased online and I’m adding a few dwarf lupines to complement my roses as well this year.
Oh and my sweet peas are also germinating quite nicely too. I’m going full on with the scented balcony garden theme.. fragrant roses, lavender and sweet peas.
I posted this in a separate thread (didn't really think about what i was doing!) - can you lovely lot help?
I need an obelisk or support of some kind to train Rose Warm Welcome up. It’s still a very small plant (bought two months ago) However it’s currently not in the biggest pot (circular tub - 33cm diameter, 40cm high).
Should I:
a, buy a smaller obelisk and train it in its existing pot?
or
b, buy a bigger pot and an obelisk to suit?
Any help welcome - particularly if you have a link to a suitable obelisk for either option!!
@jonathanmichell23 I would say b. 40x33 is on the small side for most roses and once you train the rose on the obelisk, it could easily get too top-heavy. A bigger pot would be better and if you choose cylindrical or cube shape it will also give you stability.
I have Gertrude Jekyll in a 55x43cm pot with a 1.4m obelisk (buried quite deep so it is lower, I should have bought a bigger one, maybe 1.6 or 1.8). I can photograph it for you tomorrow if you want.
I agree with edhelka… larger square shaped pot... it doesn't have to be expensive.. These obelisks which are also box shaped, are quite reasonable and last a long time, surprisingly.. I buy 1.8m and 2.2m... bury 1 foot in ground.. I suggest 1.8 for your purposes.. you can also get quite cheap round obelisks, it doesn't have to cost a lot..
thanks @edhelka and @Marlorena - this is quickly becoming my favourite part of the internet
Looks like I'm ordering a bigger pot and obelisk! I don't think I have a space on the sunny side of the garden to put it in the ground, but there's always room for a pot somewhere
@Marlorena that photo is stunning - don't tell me the names of the roses as I'll want them all and I definitely don't need any more right now lol, but wowsers what a lovely lovely shot.
