@Omori I think they send it in waves. The first was OLIVIA, the second CLAIRE and now you have EMILY.

Thanks for the DA information @Omari,  re GJ. I think DA should state it can be grown as a shrub OR a climber, then customers could then make a better choice.

As to Eglantyne, I agree the flowers are beautiful but in my garden its foliage is sparse and never looks terribly healthy. Always gets BS and defoliates badly. Unfortunately this is another rose I planted in the wrong place, I have it in a raised bed almost, fronted by a dwarf wall up from the drive so I have to look up to the blooms (I'm only tiny!). Oh well, I'll learn one day.

We have been close to overnight frost for over a week, very early for here @Tack. It’s gone cold and stormy with a bitter wind. I have a few buds and the odd bloom but the season is essentially over for me unless the weather picks up to spur the roses into a last fling. Your roses are very impressive for October.

Until this year, I had GJ as my sole potted rose planted directly into it’s 60cm VERY heavy composite stone container, so probably not the best person to ask. Maybe the usual prune by half then wrap it in several layers of bubblewrap and a heavy tarpaulin and don the chainsaw PPE. It’s going to be a hell of a job, the roots have actually cracked the pot, so yes probably needs some root pruning, assuming I can actually get it out!

  • When we had our recent winds a whole cane snapped off from my Eustacia Vye right from the base.  I thought i could make 2 stem cuttings from it so popped it in water until I had time to pot up (hopefully this weekend).  Checked on it today and saw these lovely roots.  So should I still use a seedling/cutting compost or could I put it into normal compost with John Innes or does it make no difference?

Thank you @Nollie, yes that does sound like a big job. Is it going in the ground now? Nights are down to 5 deg which is why I guess the roses are just barely changing. But I have so many buds I'll be gutted if they don't flower, particularly on the ones I haven't seen yet. I imagine light levels are important too so I shouldn't get my hopes up.

Oh dear @Nollie. How long had it been in that pot?

I’ve had it for 3 years @poppyfield64. Impressive roots on your Eustacia casualty.

I can beat you there @Tack, 2.3c at 8pm this morning! I hope you get some better weather before winter really sets in. Not sure yet were I’m going to put Gertie. It probably does need to go in the ground, but I’m scratching my head as all the viable planting holes in my rocky ground are already allocated to new roses. Perhaps a dedicated small raised bed somewhere...

  • Thanks @Nollie.

I'm in the same boat @Tack.  I have a large cluster of buds of GdeF and Rhapsody in Blue and I noticed today some tiny buds appearing on Lucky and A Whiter Shade of Pale.  The weather is so erratic here at the moment so will be interesting to see if anything comes of them.

@nollie Re: the sunglasses I thought you were just feeling extra pleased with yourself about the miracle gro 😆 Good luck with your regime, it will be interesting to see how we all get on!

I can’t use anything stinky either. I tried Vitax Q4 and learned quickly that it was like dog ambrosia.

We all have our work cut out for us from the sounds of it! I’ve lost count but I think I have around 10 roses and a tree to sort out when it all arrives 😬 Well, that’s a problem for future me to deal with 🙃

@sarinka Ty! Hope your Boule de Neige gives you lots of pleasure, I believe @katsa has this one as well.

I have a bould de neige and it's amazing! I love the smell and think I'll be trailing it up an obelisk as well. Right now it's in a planter as I had to move it as we're rebuilding a shed.

All my roses look terrible right now. Loads of black spot and funny colour leaves. I don't know if that's usual for this time of year? Should I be doing anything proactive for next year right now?

Sorry for being so quiet. Term's started and online teaching is taking over my life!

Thanks for the comments on B de N, Katsa. Can't wait for Trevor White to deliver it.😊

DA just informed me that Lady of Shallot and Gabriel Oak have been dispatched (eek, not ready- the lavatera trimestris in the spot where LofS will go is still blooming away). But excited!
