I like the pattern on that arch, right up the middle and over the top... my one reservation about it is that, I notice the width/depth from bar to bar is only 30cm.. 1 foot... that's quite narrow... I prefer those with depth 15-18 inches.. it will mean quite a restriction when it comes to training a rose... in fact, I might put a twining Japanese Honeysuckle on it instead, as the flowers hang gracefully on the plant and it blooms for a long season.
However, if roses, I would consider The Wedgwood Rose.. without worrying about reports of balling in wet weather, at least where I am.. the lax growth is pliable and the blooms hang down.. if the bars were wider I might choose 'Parade'...
What I wouldn't want is a plant, like climbing hybrid teas, where the flowering shoots tend to grow upwards..
I see David Austin has another one of their competitions on Instagram, to win a free rose... has anyone entered these before and won anything? I haven't.. I thought it was UK only but I've noticed lots of people from other countries putting their names down too.. they don't seem to make it clear but I'm sure I read somewhere previously it was only for UK customers at the moment..
I think I entered once. Or maybe it's the same competition still going on? I don't know it takes seconds to write a comment. There are always thousands of comments. I agree they are not clear about that. I think many Americans don't realize that that account is managed by British DA... they often ask things like "what zone are you in" and similar questions.
My question seems to have slipped into oblivion, so I'll have one more try. My mature albertine is flowering again. Is it stressed or is it the strange weather? I'm concerned that it might be the last hurrah before it succumbs.
@B3 ..I'm sorry your question was missed there... no, nothing that unusual, just enjoy the few extra blooms... occasionally a once blooming rose will offer a few later blooms.. I have one that does that, like once in every 30 years it seems.. I'm disappointed it's not this year though.. other roses do it more frequently, especially with the line of breeding similar to Albertine, some going on into autumn..
@Marlorena That’s a very good point about the width, I hadn’t noticed that. Can’t seem to find a good half arch that isn’t ££££, modifying is probably the way to go but I was hoping for something ready made. Bah. I do like the look of Wedgewood rose, very pretty. I might put in a regular arch somewhere and grow that.
Well not too exciting but an early morning collage...the air is so crisp and fresh right now.
Top row is Double Apricot Hollyhock, returned from last year, and Munstead Wood. Bottom is Alexander, and Aster Monch is starting. Sorry about the crappy quality of MW, it was backlit and refused to focus properly.
@Omori - I love Aster Monch, it’s one of the best plants in my garden at the moment. It’s been going for weeks. One of those colours that would look good with anything.
@Marlorena maybe he buried something there years ago and you keep planting on top of it. Watson's saving grace is that he is not a digger. He has chewed up a pair of gardening gloves, the plug off the strimmer and bitten off various branches.
@edhelka thank you for all the info on 'Empereur Charles IV'. I think this is definitely one worth getting. The photos of it look great on that site and I think the richer colour would look nice amongst my paler pinks.
@Omori your Hollyhock is lovely. Are they quite easy to grow?
Had a little wander around the garden this morning and took these photos using my camera instead of my phone. My phone didn't want to pick up the red rose at all.
Charles Austin's second bloom.
Royal Jubilee's first bloom just starting to open.
Cheshire carpet rose has had flowers all summer so far.
Paul's Scarlett climber.
Ghislaine de Feligonde second flush just starting.
