  • @Marlorena thank you so much for your offer of help. It was bought from style roses, and has been planted 6 months. I have the list of all the fragrant roses I bought, but no photo looked like the blooms I have. It’s a bush hybrid tea, picked with a large bunch for my house. I would not have bought a yellow rose as my roses are for picking and with colour schemes etc. I keep off yellow. The reason I don’t want to get in touch with them is that I sent a few roses back for replacement when they didn’t come into leaf and I think they will be sick of me. May I say your flowers and fantastic expertise is wonderful, thank you so much for sharing with us. Valerie

    A bit miffed today, my Aloha rose has gone AWOL! I was supposed to receive it today and according to Fedex they claim that they have delivered it, but I haven't received the delivery :( ....Asked neighbours as well, to no avail.
    If it was any other delivery I wouldn't feel so annoyed, but this rose is so precious and I feel sad that the wrong person might receive it and not appreciate it. Cottage Memories (who I ordered it from) have been brilliantly responsive though and were very quick to ship my order, so nothing but kudos to them! I hope I get united with my Aloha soon o:)

    Nice to see your Bathsheba @Marlorena, I planted one bought from DA 19th May and am eagerly awaiting the first flower any day. I wonder what colour I'll get.

    @Tack beautiful roses! You haven't seen my Aloha by any chance  :D Also ordered from Cottage Memories, Fedex says they delivered it today, but I haven't received a delivery. Glad to hear you are happy with the quality of your roses!

    ..thank you Valerie, that's kind of you... I still don't know your rose, it's not one I recognise from Style, but I do not know their roses well...   I hope you find out in due course. Perhaps when you've had the rose for longer we can take another look at it..

    @cats_and_dogs
    ..sorry about your Aloha... all's well and that end's well I hope...   I've had roses go astray in the mail before now..

    @Tack
    ..they look good.. I must remember to order from them in the future...

    I've bought a number of roses from Cottage Memories recently - they've been great and super helpful. In fact, I've 3 more being delivered today! Will check to see if an Aloha has snuck in :D@cats_and_dogs

    @Omori - would be be useful to dig it up in the winter and place a bit farther out? I did try to plant at an angle so the root ball was farther out. I'm now worried I've planted all my climbing roses to close to the wall. I've planted three bare rooted roses from DA (rambling rector, alberic barbier, and claire austin) and they're all less than 12cm away from the wall, but planted at an angle with the roots farther out. these three are definitely growing - although the AB is much slower compared to the other two.

  • @Katsa thanks for keeping an eye out for my Aloha :D Good to hear that you have had positive experiences with Cottage Memories, they seems to have a lovely collection of fragrant roses and their prices get a thumbs up as well. I'll most likely place a big order come bare root season, need to make some more space in my garden first!

    Sandringham habit - I genuinely don't know. I only have it in its second year. I know it dislikes partial shade where it is.
    The habit of climbers or bigger roses can't be seen in their first years. Even with shrubs, the habit of young roses is often different from mature roses.
    Sleep, creep, leap and pots - it's a rough guideline, not a given schedule. Roses don't read instructions, some leap in their first year, some are more like sleep-creep-creep-grow backwards-die. From what I've seen, all roses that do well benefit from the maturity but sometimes it's hard to see if patience is needed or if the rose is just unhappy and patience won't help. I prefer to see some steady growth and signs of progress rather than have a shrub for years and hope that it will decide to climb one day.
    Having a rose in a pot or moving it can delay it slightly but if done well, it shouldn't be too much. Because you are keeping all the new wood and structure that grew the previous year and it's energy for roses, and you also have the bigger root system. Growing in a pot could even be a headstart if the final location is somewhat challenging. In any case, I recommend digging 40x40cm hole, unless you have really good soil with a good structure without it. But you don't need as big pots for just 8 months.
