  • OH is wearing a mask when in the Christmas crowds … I’ve recently had a booster but he’s not old enough for one so he’s taking sensible precautions.

I am now going to back off inside public spaces and meet friends outside. I have never tested positive for covid and don't want to start now. All my friends are falling like flies at the moment. A poor doctor I know has had it five times. Her system is a mess.

I've got a cold at the moment. I've tested and it was negative but it doesn't feel like Covid anyway - I know it can be hard to tell. I went to London to a Christmas work do, and knew it was probably inevitable I'd get something but went anyway. I'm too young for the booster this year and haven't managed to find somewhere to get the flu jab, so a cold is getting off lightly, really. I think I will have got it on the train home - it was standing room only for two hours  :/ I should think public transport accounts for a lot of transmission

I've just come out the other side. Not completely mended yet but considerably better than I was. Definitely not pleasant so I'd say it's worth being 'unsociable' at this time of year.

I've heard that many of the available vaccinations have not been taken and have subsequently gone past their date and been disposed of. Makes me so angry that myself and my wife are both over 60 (but under 65) and probably got it because last year's injections were no longer giving us any protection.

I did wonder when my GP surgery offered me a COVID vaccine this autumn (at less than 24 hours notice for the clinic day) if they had some that would be wasted if they didn't find any takers. I thought I didn't qualify - too young for the age criterion and although I have an autoimmune condition, I don't take immune-suppressing drugs for it. I suppose it's the GP's discretion who they offer it to once they've invited all the people over the age threshold and all the people who are definitely vulnerable because of medical conditions, and their carers. I certainly wasn't going to turn it down. OH got one as a carer for his Dad who was having chemo, so we feel reasonably confident about having my parents to stay for a couple of days over Christmas (they've had all the boosters, being over 80).
If it's true that vaccines have been thrown away rather than offered to the next age group down, that's a terrible waste when there are people who would have jumped at the chance to be vaccinated. No point in saving it until it's out of date for people who've been offered it and declined.

Do you actually know that vaccines have been wasted? Obviously it is terrible, if true, but I have certainly not seen any evidence, and I probably would have.

According to stats at gov.uk there has been an uptake of nearly 70% among those offered the lastest booster over 65s in England.

London is more like 50%, which fits the long term trend.

GP challenges government policy on Covid boosters (msn.com)

    She says:

"The fewer people are vaccinated, the more the disease is going to circulate,"

"It's a bit ridiculous that we had the vaccine and decided not to use it."

Maybe true, but she is a well known political activist, campaigning against the current government [can't blame her there ]

Sadly a lifetime in the profession taught me that most medical articles in the National Press are wrong, and worse than that often have an agenda.
Since I have been working on COVID, this has become far worse, the amount of misinformation is frightening.
