Even at the height of the pandemic one of our local supermarkets just had bottles of hand gel sat on a shelf.  You had to pick it up to use it, thereby leaving any of your germs for the next person.

Pleased to say my GP's are still insisting on facemasks, but the dentist isn't [ in the waiting room!! ]

Same with ours.  GP has only reintroduced face masks in the last few weeks, but dentist actually told me masks weren't required when they called to remind me about my check up.  Receptionists weren't wearing them either.

I don't mind wearing a mask for a short time if asked but find it difficult for more than 20 mins or so as I have chronic rhinitis and can't breathe properly. I also cough and sneeze every day and have done for years. Seems to run in the family.

That is approximately 500 per week averaged over the year.  Virtually nobody wore masks then.
I accept that many people are still extremely nervous and will take extra measures, but I'm living as 'normal' a life as possible.
True, but how many fewer deaths might there have been if people did routinely wear masks or keep away from others when they have a cold or flu? I can understand people not wanting to wear masks all day as a matter of routine, but to wear one when they are coughing and sneezing ought to be good manners. A bit like hand washing - MRSA and norovirus almost vanished for a while. Which tells a story about people's everyday hygiene habits

Clearly mask wearing and distancing  helps.

The problem with all this will always be children. My kids had a week off school last week while we had Covid and we've been told not to take them to school if they have any viral symptoms. It does seem like we're the only parents who follow the rule though. So many kids are coughing and sneezing around the place while I'm on the school run, you see some being dropped off crying and clearly unwell but the parents have to work. Then the parents take them from school to the shops and let them spread it around there. My dentist could insist on facemasks at work but he drops his kid off at the same time as me so if I've had Covid from the school he'll get it too. Although he hopefully gets more frequent boosters than I do.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

But surely the only people who would pick it up next would use it.

Aren't schools a great place for children to build up their immune system?

I was just ready that. Very interesting. The microbiome seems to me to be more worthy of exploration than spending millions to remotely  wander about on a dusty red planet - but maybe that's just me

  • Well... Mr Sod is alive and kicking.  Our choir was due to record a Christmas song to be played on the radio, on Sunday.  Today I tested positive for Covid... and OH, who is the conductor, has symptoms...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
  • Mr. Sod obviously hasn't heard of The Season of Goodwill @Liriodendron .  Hope both you and OH don't get it too badly :)
