Just flu to get booked now. GP practice usually does those. OH has already booked to have his at the pharmacy and I might do the same if the GP don't invite me in the next week or so.

There is no easy way you can prevent people catching COVID in hospital, so many people, so close together.

Hospital acquired COVID, is sadly now very common.

It's a big worry that hospitals can't protect patients from catching COVID while having treatment, or recovering, or even just waiting in outpatients' waiting areas.

My next door neighbour caught Covid in hospital whilst recovering from abdominal surgery. He died several weeks later. The whole ward became infected. But they only tested the patients after a bloke who'd just been discharged tested himself at home, found he was positive & reported it to the hospital.

A similar thing happened to my OH's uncle, but that was during the first lockdown. He was elderly and frail but living fairly independently, was admitted after falling at home, tested negative on admission. He hadn't broken anything but he was quite bruised and a bit shaken. They kept him in for several days for observation, gave him some physio, and he was about ready to go home when he developed a cough, tested positive and died shortly afterwards.
I'm a bit surprised that they aren't even testing people before they're admitted to any more, but perhaps it takes too long and if it's an emergency they can't really turn someone away away even if they have it, and possibly can't keep them isolated while still being in the right area/ward to get the treatment they need. Then there's staff and visitors (if allowed now), any of whom could have it without symptoms. I don't know what the answer is in the short term with not enough NHS staff.

Son has to go in for day surgery soon. He has to test for two days beforehand and so do I as I’m driving him in.

Most hospitals are testing all patients before admission for elective surgery. Obviously it is not possible to test emergency admissions.

Yay!  from today OH is eligble for the 50+ Covid Booster and I've booked him in online for Sat 22nd. All confirmed.  Very simple ... loads of appointments available.  He could take his pick.

  • I've booked a covid jab but I'm not sure I'll be allowed it! I'm not old enough to have it but am asthmatic and have had a chronic cough for over ten years so I really want it. The website gave the option of "I think I may be eligible" so I went with that. I'm hoping they'll think "well lots of people aren't having it, and you're here now so yes". I got called in by docs for flu jab, but I can't really claim to have severe asthma.

@Crazybeelady, take up of the vaccine is currently very low, so I think there is a good chance you will get one.
