"What has really surprised me has been the
rapidity of the increase in numbers of cases being reported from South
Africa,” said Prof François Balloux of University College London. “Cases
are doubling at a rate I have never seen before. It is very worrying. ”Early
estimates have suggested this rise is being driven by the fact that the
Omicron variant can infect between three and six times as many people
as Delta, over the same time period."
Almost certainly true, @Dovefromabove. Although I have to add that I don't think the Guardian are covering themselves in glory in their reporting of this situation.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
The information coming out of South Africa so far appears to show that although it is spreading extremely fast, it is fairly mild and infecting mainly young unvaccinated people. We'll just have to wait and see.
My son has some forum-friends in SA , some of whom live in pretty poor areas … they are very worried they are hearing about a lot of illness with some folk dying while queuing in hospital carparks … it may be that those numbers aren’t getting fed into the hospital figures?
Views may vary depending on the area being reported from.

But the work of the author, a GP rather than an expert, is very much at odds with virologists and immunologists around the world.
Doesn't being the chair of the SA Medical Association with 33 years experience...and the person supposedly credited with discovering Omicron.. make her at least credible??
