I am always surprised to hear that GPs get paid extra to do things like health checks, vaccinations, signing death certificates, visiting patients etc. I would have thought that should be part of the job specification. What next? Teachers reading pupils’ work but demanding a bonus for writing comments? Hairdressers telling clients to bring their own scissors? Steeplejacks and roofers wanting extra pay if they use ladders?

Here they seem to be using vaccination centres staffed by admin staff to check ID and current vaccine status then Red Cross types to manage the queuing and chair cleaning with retired doctors doing the medical questionnaire re fevers, allergies etc and then nurses to administer the vaccines.

For those who can't or won't go to a centre, there are pharmacies delivering local vaccines.  That leaves GPs free to be GPs.

That is happening here too.  Because I can travel easily I had my booster at a vaccination hub - all admin tasks done by volunteers, and   medically trained only doing the vaccine itself.  I had to drive about 10 miles to the centre - and it all ran wonderfully well.

The GPs here are catering for those who cannot travel as easily - or can’t be bothered to put themselves out.  And there are a few of those.  I remember being astounded at the fuss one of my lecturers made about having to travel to get the first vaccine.  Refused point blank to have it til she could walk to the appointment.  And this was someone who drove 30 miles to work every single day.  Some people just love being awkward.

@BenCotto - I would rather doctors got paid extra than MPs' friends and cohorts!

  • Maybe we should ask Covid how to protect us from the UK Gov?

The view of British scientists is rather different. I don’t know how much of this is due to the desperation of the SAs to get the flight ban lifted.

It makes entire sense to be cautious. Nothing was known about the SA variant -  very little is still known. Coetzee if probably being attacked by South African interests for risking trade and tourism.

I wouldn't be citing the Daily Mail here as a paean of balance and good judgement. Melville is a lockdown sceptic.

    I'm not.

Why is Melville being a 'lockdown sceptic' an issue?..in fact I don't even know what a lockdown sceptic is? All I know is I don't want another lockdown, what does that make me?

Steve, just giving some examples of wasted money. Encountered a good bit of health tourism as well.
