according to todays news, the virus has already mutated in China to a nastier strain. I had a heated "debate" on Mumsnet recently, about people washing their hands after visiting the toilet, I was told I was being ridiculous because "if you use toilet paper, nothing gets on your hands", I pointed out that toilet paper is in fact permeable, because otherwise you couldnt wipe with it, you may as well use a plastic bag. I wonder if they are now washing their hands more often!! I know people who are panic buying, going mad. I have a friend who is a highly intelegent highly qualified engineer, has ben panic buying for a couple of months, asked if it was because of Brexit, was told, no, its because all the shops will be empty and close down. Ironically, this person smokes like a chinmey, and has gone to work with high temp and cold, (no, I havent been in contact with them for weeks) just makes me cross, because they are the first to complain about people spreading germs!
Just followed on of the links to an Australian paper on the ongoing toilet roll saga but noticed also that they are publishing the flight numbers and countries of departure when flyers have tested positive for the virus. Seems a sensible move to me so that people can check whether they might have been in contact.
We do know in the village that a local had flown back from a skiing holiday in Northern Italy after half term - one of my friends met her briefly but we have no idea who she is.
I'm completely baffled by the Australian obsession with loo roll? Really - why? It's not like the disease gives you the raging trots and on a scale of one to really-can't-manage-without-it, I'd have understood water or bread or the like but toilet rolls? Maybe it's because they think they'll be living on beans for weeks.....
Just been to our local Tesco for the regular shop. Plenty of toilet rolls No hand sanitiser (I wasn't planning to buy any, just noticed on the way past) and also out of paracetamol - presumably because India have said they're limiting exports.
I did get some extra nice soap from the plastic free shop in town and a few extra tins in case my public transport habit leads to us having to shut ourselves away for a couple of weeks.
Currently the chances of you getting coronavirus globally are about half your chance of being struck by lightning, but it's best to be prepared, I suppose. I think it's sensible for us to all be aware and take reasonable precautions but I also think the more or less blanket news coverage is making it seem far more imminent than it is just now. I can't imagine the BBC are going to be able to keep up the total news flood for the many weeks this is likely to go on, but then again. Maybe they will.
Just as well Hilary Mantel's new book is a really long one.

We don't have that problem here at the moment with paracetamol, SM here aren't allowed to sell it, you have to buy it from behind the counter in the pharmacy.

A team of Chinese scientists have effectively played a complex game of “genetic spot the difference” with 103 coronavirus samples.
Their findings suggest there are two distinct “strains” of the virus, but what this means is speculation.
The researchers have found differences in the genetic code of the two strains, but they do not show this alters the behaviour of the virus.
They do not prove one is “more aggressive” than the other, as has been reported.
That will require further experiments and the researchers themselves say the amount of data they have to work with is “still very limited”.'
Lets not jump the gun on the scaremongering just yet.
