Did I mishear this? Is Boris really writing to every household? Surely, if that's via snail mail, isn't that then potentially introducing the virus into each house? Isn't that barking - and wouldn't it be more sensible to ban all advertising dross that is still being sent via mail rather than adding to the problem?
They even had a Dr on BBC Breakfast this morning saying how to deal with mail - ie to bin the outer envelope and wash hands for 20 seconds - and  then went on to talk about Boris' letter without pointing out the issue.

Probably assuming most of us can put 2 and 2 together ? 😉

It’s the thought of that letter costing over £5M to send that is most upsetting to me.

Really? 13 million letters, that have been touched by umpteen people, dropping onto the mats of every household doesn't strike you as being a bijou snagette? Especially when Boris or whoever could have simply gone on TV with far less human involvement? Oh well..

Yes - but perhaps if people had stopped behaving like complete a***holes @AuntyRach, it wouldn't have been needed.

Unless you're living in a cave somewhere, there has been more than adequate information about how to act responsibly. It's the usual story with this minority - it won't happen to me, and I don't care anyway  :/

The problem is that nowadays there’s a generation/section of people who don’t watch the ‘usual’ tv channels that carry news and current affairs type programmes.

You’d be surprised at the number of people who have only a sketchy idea of what’s going on or what they’re supposed to be doing.

...and you think 13 million household will open the letter and read the contents avidly?...and then bin the envelope and before touching anything else will wash their hands for 20 seconds?

Some will and some won’t. Because my son speaks a bit of Russian he’s explained what’s required to a neighbour who is the Romanian pastor of the Pentecostal church attended by a lot of Roma in Ipswich. While some folk speak adequate English for most circumstances they may not understand some words and terms being used and don’t watch English news programmes.

The pastor has spread the word in his community via their church Fbook group and the Roma men and lads have stopped gathering in large groups outside their homes to socialise as they usually do, and the children are being kept indoors to play rather than in the side streets and playgrounds.

    Every little helps.

Not sure what your point is - are you saying that people who couldn't potentially understand a broadcast from Boris could read a letter? Or will non-english speakers be passing a potentially infected piece of bumf to others to get it translated?

My 2 don't watch standard TV, and they don't walk around staring at a phone, but they're more than aware of what's going on because the headlines come up on their laptops/tablets. They also have other people explaining it to them if necessary. They're really can't be that many who know nothing.

Anyone with children should know, unless their children haven't been to school, yet I saw people walk past me yesterday with their children when I was talking to my neighbour - on the other side of the road - not keeping a reasonable distance from either of us. She had to step back into a garden because they just strolled by on the pavement where she was standing. Nowt so stupid as some folk.
