@philippa smith2 The helicopters at Hinckley point were part of a joint training operation to be ready should the case ever arise to evacuate the site.  A friend of mine was thrilled to be a "casualty" and get a free ride in an RAF helicopter!

I'm thankful to have been born at a time when - up to now - I haven't given a thought to catching an infectious disease which could kill me.  My mum lost her best friend at primary school to diphtheria, and a work colleague just before WW2 to TB.  I was immunised against smallpox - a friend in the town we moved from last year, was remembering that they had a smallpox outbreak in 1953, in which 2 people died.  The death rate from smallpox was 30%, I believe.
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.

One thing I haven't been able to find a satisfactory answer about is whether vaping can transmit this kind of virus or not :/  You see people blowing out big clouds of water vapour which would have to be an increased vector for virus transmission if the vapour isn't chemically treated. If air conditioning can transmit the disease like it seemed to be the case on the cruise ships then public vaping must be of some concern surely?
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Prof Whitty - who earlier said an epidemic in the UK was "likely" - said people who had been in contact with the new patients are being traced.

In "the worst case scenario", up to 80% of the UK population could be infected with coronavirus, which causes the disease Covid-19, he said.

But he said a move to lock down entire towns and cities across the UK would be "very unlikely". [ BBC News ]

The CMO of the NHS earlier today.

None of what I have said is meant to alarm anyone.

It is simply so that people can be aware and take sensible precautions.

I have seen the end result of a pandemic and although it did not kill many people, it was close to being a global disaster.

Forewarned is forearmed, I think my mother used to say.

Denying there is a problem is a sure fire way, to ensure there is one. 50 patients arrived in London today, on a flight where they had been in close contact with a person who has tested positive. Where are those people now? Who have they been in contact with?

It should be possible to trace the passengers, no?
It does seem that efforts to contain the virus may not have not worked.

It appears now that there are two strains (at least). The one that has the worst symptoms seems to be abating as the patients are hospitalised and quarantined. The milder form is the one that is spreading now.
    Keep washing hands.

Where did you see / hear this fidgetbones?  Not doubting you, simply wondering about the source.

potentially the longer the virus is around, the more chance there is of it mutating [ when you consider many viruses replicate 50 times an hour ]
If it mutates the new species may be more, or, less virulent.
