I get upset about masks because I see them as a constant reminder of the awful situation we have been put into by people in power and I feel they are useless the way they are being worn. I believe we should always question, always ask for facts and evidence and never just believe what we are told unless we trust the people telling us and I don’t trust any government or politician. When I see with my own eyes how people are wearing masks it makes me ask what is the point?
Because some coverage is better than none. They may fiddle and touch their mask, that is on them.. you wash your hands and you're fine if you touch a surface they contaminate. Under their nose? Rather useless.. but should catch half a sneeze (which is better than none).. and talking breath travels farther than nose exhalation.
Debbs, BMJ, report in May it is complciated medical jargon, but says masks can prevent droplet spread by up to 79%. They arent to protect YOU, but other people.Thats what so many people don't seem to grasp, I when I started Nursing surgeons wore cotton washable masks.

You could try looking at the graph to see how the curve went down, in what way have we been put into this situation by the government? Facts maybe different, depends on who’s preparing them, but, we are given facts, and the fact is these measures are helping to reduce the spread. The government are guided by medics, or do you think they’re making it up as they go along. None of them are medics. maybe we should campaign for our country to be a police run state, according to my friend in Spain, the police are armed and you don’t argue. Who would like that here.

If a mask only helps by 5% that’s 5% better than nothing.
Reminders of the situation are good ... this situation could go on for years ... we have to get used to it and smile (with our eyes), or else we’ll all go under.

I'd like to see the science behind masks and their effectiveness in different scenarios. If the mask wearer constantly adjusts the mask (and the mask is a two way filter - it stops the wearer's breath spreading, but it also vacuums up particles coming in from others) and touches the 'filter' that is the mask, then their hands are potentially contaminated (whether wearing gloves or not) - if they then proceed to touch objects that others can come in contact with, they potentially stop immediate airbourne transmission, but still contaminate surfaces.
What I've seen (both via TV and in my few excursions outside), is that mask 'abuse' (worn incorrectly and / or adjusted by touching the mask) appears to be quite common.
Oddly, the holidaymakers coming back from Spain to quarantine were quite commonly saying, when interviewed on TV, that they felt safer in Spain - as Spain had introduced masks in public before the UK - but the reason they were coming back to quarantine, was simply that Spain had experienced spikes in certain areas. It could be that in those areas people were lax with the mask rules but it does highlight the grey areas around all this.
It seems (IMHO) that reducing contact as much as possible and hygiene are still the way to go. My perception (from limited experience) is that those wearing PPE in public act as if they're in some way immune - and get closer than they would had they not been wearing protection.
As I said @steveTu, my OH wears a mask all day every day he’s at work and that’s not his perception ... customers are required to wear one or they don’t come in. It’s a small shop so only 6 customers at a time ... hand sanitisers at the door and they’re asked to use them before touching any goods. No one complains and everyone seems to follow the instructions.

When I went shopping the other day, I noticed one or two wearing slightly grubby single use masks. How would it take for the virus to die on the fabric?
If everyone was like your OH Dove, we wouldn’t be in this situation now, but there are so many armchair politicians, scientists, virologists, and while we have those, we’ll probably stay in this situation. Now we are hearing that people won’t have a flu jab, even if one is perfected.
