Hello all, I'm a doctor, I saw some people asking about the pneumococcal vaccine earlier, I'm not sure if it was subsequently answered. Pneumococcal vaccine helps protect against certain bacterial pneumonias. I believe this issue with corvid-19 is it causes Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome which is essentially very inflamed lungs due to the virus itself. Of course, like flu, when the lungs become inflamed they are prone to picking up other bacterial bugs, like pneumococcus, so there may be some benefit in having the vaccine now. There's definitely benefit in the long run for when this corvid business hopefully blows over. So anyone over 65 check (or younger with spleen on kidney problems) should check they've had it.
    Hope that's helpful

I would imagine the Express, Mail etc and talk radio are making a hoo ha about loo roll and scaring people.

Hi @Erasha, don't want to diss a fellow Dr., but as an ICU consultant I can say that there is no evidence that COVID 19 causes ARDS.
There is also no particular bacteria associated with the pneumonia, so it is probably just viral pneumonia. Therefore there is no evidence that anti pneumococcal vaccine would be of any benefit.
I don't think the NHS would thank you if 1000s of people start turning up at their GP's asking for a vaccination of doubtful benefit.

I did wonder about that post!  Either it was a predictive spelling error, or they don’t know what this virus is!

No diss taken, it's been a while since I was in a hospital :) I wouldn't be unhappy if patients who were meant to have their pneumococcal vaccine who fell into the above categories rang up asking for them though? Particularly after covid-19 tails off as above.. Admin staff are able to check their vaccine record and book them with a nurse if needed
  • I was expecting no loo rolls at aldi yesterday but there were plenty and no one was panic buying anything.i know it's a serious illness but I am washing my hands regularly and hoping we all get thru this.in the meantime I will be pottering on the garden tomorrow trying to take my mind off it all!

Totally agree that having the vaccine is generally a good idea, just not a good idea if people overwhelm their GP's now.

The loo roll thing just shows how backward our shopping habits are. Everywhere else in the world it's normal to buy things in bulk but in the UK you're seen as being a trifle dramatic if you buy anything larger than a 12 pack. Maybe some good will come of it. More people swapping to bidets and washable nappies? :/
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Yet again , my apologies for the title spelling error ; I intended writing Coronavirus but forgot to erase the 'r' .
Am normally pedantic regarding spellings and pronunciations etc ......feel like a right plonker now!... :'(

In our local stores today ; Aldi , Morrisons , Lidl , Home Bargains and B&M's all had plenty of loo-rolls , pastas and everything else which are apparently getting into short supply elsewhere .
No-one seemed to be panic buying .
My wife and I always multi-buy anyway as our shopping expedition normally involves a forty-mile round trip !
