It will take a lot of planning, as for the bikes or walking Hubby said something in Sarf London speak, for no, hes not prepared to cycle 40 miles each way to work. I think hes being unreasonable and it would do him good!! I gather they are putting in screens in the garage where he works, but that will be for the office staff reception who come into contact with the public, he will aparently get gloves and masks, and they will work 2 mtrs apart, no mention of cars being disinfected, as one vhehicle group I know are doing, by the valeters.
I've been following this thread since the start, and it's so interesting to have read all the arguments and discussions, but I'm wondering how much longer the extreme restrictions will be able to last. Full disclosure, I have existing mild to moderate mental health problems, and this past week I've started what feels like a mental breakdown. I'm late 30's (just scrape it!) and my husband is one of the shielding folk, so whilst we're getting deliveries, any top up shops or anything else is down to me. I have to drive to a walk as there's too many people I'd have to pass on the streets, and I'm struggling to even do that most days. I'd love to just go out for a walk from my front door, to burn off some stress, but it's too busy out there. I love my garden, but it's small and all gardens round here are cheek by jowl - and my neighbours are in theirs constantly with young screaming children, so no peace there, either.
Just to save my sanity, if I can make it, I'm going to visit my parents this week. They're in their 70s, so everything is screaming don't go, but they have a huge garden and I'll be at a distance. There will be a medicinal cup of tea and a chat, and the sounds of peace and quiet and birdsong.
I get so livid at people so blatantly breaking the rules, when I'm trying so hard to comply, but then I think I'm about to do the same for the sake of my sanity, so maybe I'm too quick to judge others.
Just posting this to show there's another side to the story of lock down, eg situations that also have to be taken into consideration when deciding what to do. I'm definitely glad I'm not a decision maker in government, although from my lay person's point of view they've managed it appallingly (confusion, lack of crystal clear guidance, lack of enforcement etc).
Just back from grocery shop lot of cars on the road.cant imagine my mum going it was so different.theyd moved the entrance for one thing! Blocked one off.old people wearing masks young people not bothered, laughing away.she was thrilled tho.im going over again tomorrow to do their garden and yes I shall have a cup of tea me outside she inside and I'm sorry if that's against "the rules " but if I didnt my dad would drive her mad and I wouldn't have any parents by the time we get the vaccine
I have, unusually for me, been very supportive of the government, up until now, but having 4 countries with different rules, is totally unmanageable.
I've been supportive even defensive of the government, as we really do not know if a different leadership or party would have handled things better.
The address last night though, just left me cold. The message was not clear at all.
Keir Starmer summed it up, the speech lacked 'clarity and consensus'
As we are shielding, for us it is 'no change'.
I have a horrible feeling the current situation is little more than an experiment to see what happens to the R number. I don't fancy being a guinea pig in such an experiment.
I haven't tried but is it actually possible to buy the face masks that people are now being advised to wear? If governments are struggling to get hold of enough for key workers then I can't imagine they're especially cheap. I know DIY seems to be popular but I'd want a rating on them to show they're actually going to do the job personally. The only mask I have is valved so it protects me but not everyone else.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
