Ah, but if you didn't take the seals off @wild edges, you wouldn't know the gunk was there!  Never cleaned our dishwasher either, except for the filters and door. If it cleans the dishes ok, then it stands to reason it cleans everything inside the machine likewise. And if you've never been ill via a dirty dishwasher, then surely it doesn't matter?
Methinks you might be bored and looking for things to do!!!

Don't folk use those dishwasher cleaners you stick in the cutlery tray?
White vinegar works just as well but most of the nasty stuff are the bits that have snuck through the seals and are lurking where the water won't touch them.
I use Soda Crystals every now and then.
I've never thought of soda crystals. Use them with every wash for laundry.

My gran used to say that only boring people get bored. I'm sure she'd be pleased to know that it's been a long time since I had time to be bored. I am good at finding distractions when I've got better things I should be doing though :#  She didn't have any useful phrases about procrastination sadly.

If I found seals in my dishwasher, I'd urge them down to the beach and back out to sea.

Washing machines broken, 5 year parts and labour shop guarantee was up at the end of September.
Probably need a new one, that is the one electrical gadget I can’t do without.

Five years isn't long. Are you sure it can't be repaired?

Don’t know yet, man coming this morning, unfortunately these items are not made to last, all good for the economy, not good when we’ve got to take it to the tip.
parts and labour is so expensive now and something else will go wrong with it next month.
Nothing’s built  to last these days.
