Do you need every road sign to be written in full or is it best to learn the ones that give you speed limits, make you stop, warn about black ice/oncoming traffic;potential roadslip etc?

There is a sign that warns of black ice? How clever! What is the symbol for that?
Road signs are usually self evident, but a cross on top of a triangle or a square with a line inside it on a clothes label is not.

In France and French speaking Belgium, the sign for black ice is a red triangle with a car at an angle and two skid mark squiggles under its tyres then an additional rectangle underneath that says "verglas" (black ice)
