My all-time favourite checkout conversation (not at all curmudgeonly I'm afraid) was when my mum and I had a bottle of wine in our basket and the young man at the checkout smiled sweetly at my mum and asked if she was over 18.  As she was over 80, it made her day.

I found myself speaking rather curtly to the unexpected item in the bagging area lady. She thinks that if she starts every instruction with 'please', polite customer service is satisfied.
She practically accused me of shoplifting! "Please check that you have scanned all of your items" . Well i had thought of shoving a 20lb turkey and a Serrano ham up my jumper but then where would i put the champagne and plastic cheese slices ? 😡

Our local Morrisons has self scan checkouts that use the phrase "Surprising item in the baggage area".
I have a mental picture of a banana (for example)leaping out saying "Surprise !! Didn't think you'd see me here did you ?"

It's good to know that human ingenuity can still surprise a computer.

@AnniD- it's like the doors that state they're 'alarmed'. I always smile to myself when I see them - half hoping they'll will jump in surprise if I use it....

    Nice story @josusa47 :)

I remember trying to buy fairy cake cases once, and wondering why they weren't in the baking section. They were in the stationery bit.
    Well, they're paper, arent they?
Are you even allowed to call them fairy cakes any more?

@Fairygirl - Sort of the reverse to when I got into making kites - French military box, delta stunt kites etc.  Expected to find a book in the hobbies and crafts section at the library but was re-directed to aeronautical engineering.
