@BS - you can make a cylinder of chicken wire to the diameter of the cage+those bars and twice it's height. Twist the top to gather it round and then bend the bottom under to keep the parakeets out. It would be an adaptation of these pigeon cloches to protect salads and cabbages.

thanks for idea @Obelixx .I have a roll of chicken wire somewhere. How would the birds get in? Would they just poke their heads through the holes? Also the parakeets can hang upside down like bats.
The small ones like sparrows and tits get in through the holes as long as they're big enough so 1" minimum. Still need a coat hanger to keep the sides rigid though or it'll collapse and the holes will distort.

Chicken wire is big enough for anything up to sparrow size. I used the old wire shelving from one of those flyaway, plastic growhouses for my cages. I'd guess the holes are about 2 inches square. The starlings occasionally try it out, but they don't like it, as it's a tight squeeze for them. You could probably get one for about a tenner just now. The shelves will bend, so you could make a cube shape quite easily.

Gave one away a few months ago I've a horrible suspicion 2L bottles are a standard size. I've got a bottle of busy water i don't want because it looked bigger. Looks like I'll be trying the coathanger method. Will keep y'all posted. They're not going to win!!
@Fairygirl I do have a bird cage type style, but it doesn't work that well as my birds are too nervous to risk going in. Here (in North London) my garden is too small and there are too many cats around. The feed just rotted away.
I think I might be a genius, but modesty forbids 😇 Water bottle slit up the side to ease it on Connecting rod goes through neck. Spring works. Now to see what the evil greens make of it.

That's a pity it didn't work for you @Fire. Mine have been very successful. I'm thinking of patenting them
