One of the other mixes has a yellow millet in it, and it does look similar to yours, but paler, so it's possibly that. I'm surprised the birds don't eat it though. I used to use a mix with millet and I don't remember there being much waste. I just looked again, and they sell millet separately. They say it's popular with sparrows. We have loads of sparrows and robins, so perhaps that's why it was always eaten up.

I think it's the dari seed that they're rejecting. I'll try some other mix next time. I seem to remember that the no grow one I saw looked as if it had a lot of porridge in it. That definitely wouldn't grow! I'll see if there are any better ones. The goldfinches and tits aren't so messy, but the sparrows throw the seeds about everywhere.

Aye - messy bu**ers
I find the goldies very messy, but I love seeing them, so I don't mind. My sunflower feeders are in the cages, which have bases, so that helps. I just give them a good scoosh with the hose every so often to clean them up.

The one that visits here is a right wee bu**er, but I've become fond of him. He tried desperately to get into the cages, strangely -for the sunflower hearts rather then the nuts, but I became ridiculously upset just before Christmas when I found one on the road when out walking. It was on a bad bend, and I risked life and limb [ ok- maybe not quite] to take it off the road. Not a mark on him.
I don't know why I felt like that. I'm like most people - trying to keep them out, and moaning about them being invaders and digging up bulbs etc. There's no reds round here to pass the pox onto, and to be honest, they aren't too big a problem in gardens as they have loads of suitable habitat where I am. I just felt an overwhelming sadness. Not his fault they're here after all. Must have been the time of year....

@B3 Persistent beggars I've seen the 'resident Glaswegian' ones flying over a couple of times recently, but they haven't been in the garden again. The two pigeons vying for superiority have been very amusing though.
'you back off' 'no - you back off' 'I can't. There's a raised bed behind me'

Determined bu**er Yes - they're quite full on at times, with the wing up at right angles etc. I should really take a video. One of them rushed off suddenly one day, then I saw why, as he quickly reappeared chasing the female. She was having none of it. It was like the Benny Hill Show
