What did I NOT like about Chelsea

  • One show talked about a shortlist of 20 new plants, but we were not shown any of them for more than a second, apart from the three winners. Surely every gardener would have been interested in the others? There was plenty of padding that could have been removed to make way for them.

    They’re listed here https://www.rhs.org.uk/shows-events/rhs-chelsea-flower-show/news/2019/chelsea-plant-of-the-year-2019

That’s the difficulty nowadays... so much of what might be addressed on the show is already available online and they’d then be accused of duplicating and wasting the opportunity to bring us something different. A difficult line to tread I think.

That's true Dove, l had to look them up online. Got to be honest, I wasn't keen on the winner but never mind.
The item about plants coming back into fashion, l turned to OH and said "Like dahlias a few years back". When she mentioned dahlias l thought but they have been popular for a few years now. A blogger l follow who was covering Chelsea, thought it was odd as well.

They've been 'back' for at least 10 years. I would say it's more like 15. That was very odd.

The very last scene between Monty and Joe was so awkward. I wonder what really happened between them. They looked uncomfortable talking to each other, and the conversation got really ridiculous at the end.
I like both of them separately from each other, but together they make me cringe.

Yes, when Monty said he'd only do a show garden with his wife Sarah as opposed to doing one with Joe, Joe said something like "I'd do a show garden with your wife". It all seemed a bit like forced banter, l've never noticed it so much in previous years.

There seemed to be a really strained atmosphere between them all week.

Agreed. I hardly watch the show, but both times I tuned in this time around, it felt like forced banter and tense. Mind you, Monty is such a gentleman that he never rises to it.

As an aside (maybe it's just me) but did anyone notice in last night's Chelsea, how Joe Swift was being quite antagonistic toward Monty, as they closed the show? I know it's tongue in cheek and Monty handled it very well, but it irritated me  ;)
I was going to raise the same point, but I'm less inclined to accept that it was said 'tongue in cheek'.  Joe Swift is consistent in one thing, he will always try to demean anybody who likes 'traditional' gardens, be that formal or cottage.
But why?! Are they not on trend enough for him?  :)

Nothing new there, my wife and I notice it every year, Im not sure if its very friendly micky taking as you can do with some very good friends, or a genuine tension between them, but its apparent every time they are on screen together to me
First time I've watched it and I found it cringeworthy...
