I know alot of people like Passandra cucumbers @GWRS but they just don't perform for me. Again the Beth Alpha out perform them, and I have had 50 out of three plants. I too have had yellow ones.
@purplerallim that’s a huge number of cucumbers 🥒 I did wonder if they went yellow due to too much Sun ? As they all where below the shading in greenhouse
Mine were near the bottom of the plants @GWRS so somewhat shaded, plus we covered the greenhouse in the very hot weeks, but still turned, so I think it was more heat than sun.
I did 2 stints at the plots yesterday as rain interrupted the first. One of the plots near me has been vacated, it's a shame as the lady who did most of the work used to be an active member of the society and was plot letting Secretary for a while, during my time as Chairman, but they just haven't really done anything for the past 2 seasons., and it's surprising just how fast things get out of hand. They only took a few things away, and her husband said to me if anything was useful to take it before they handed back the keys. I felt awkward and only took a few bamboo canes at first, but later after talking to another ex committee member decided to take some of the timber from two raised beds, they were really heavy scaffold planks. I am starting to plan for the long term and will make raised beds as I'm not sure if I will be up to digging a whole plot in the future. It's a pity more people don't think long term, end up struggling either due to physical constraints or lack of time. Not sure how it is on your sites, we have a policy of starting people on a 1/2 plot to see how well they cope, but even then some that move to a full plot just end up not managing, they underestimate just how much effort it takes.
@Allotment Boy , the past committee have let people have several plots and in every case they couldn’t cope The plot holder that had to be evicted via the Land owners Solicitors had 2 1/2 plots and is in such a mess we will need at least 1 skip to clear it
So now we are restricting to half plots or some of the smaller plots for new people
I’m definitely thinking about how I run our plot as I get older
The committee on my site used to let certain people do as they liked one chap had a double plot which was mainly woodchip paths with a few raised beds and the top of the plot was like a compound with 6ft high fences behind which he had a shed, greenhouse and chicken run. When the council got a new allotment officer he must have told the committee to get the fence removed as the chap took it all down and quit the site. The site always had a waiting list but would let plot holders take on multiple plots to the detriment of prospective plot holders, the council solved that problem by ruling that plot holders would no longer be able to take another plot if there were people on the waiting list, simple really but the committee would have allowed the waiting list to grow if it was left up to them.
Hello , had 3 days at allotment , preparing for Autumn 🍂 , lots done including a big burn up Beetroot & Carrots 🥕 have started growing again, amazing Don’t think the sprouts are going to be any good for Christmas 🎄
We are not allowed fires before November, though I have plenty that needs it. I still have 1row of late maincrop spuds to lift. The first row filled a big sack so I am hoping that the second will be as good. Still picking beans and Tomatoes, I have more cabbage to gather. I am hoping the sprouts will have time to bulk up in time.
I gave up on sprouts after last year's crop didn't live up to expectations and I doubt that it would have been any different this year, I've also given up on parsnips, they grow but turn out woody, leeks, what with having to protect them from moth and then the wet winter weather turns them soft, swede and turnip, never want to grow, cabbages and cauliflowers, too much trouble, purple sprouting broccoli, grows ok and usually tastes great but the growing season is too long, radish, supposed to be easy to grow but not for me they aren't, on the verge of giving up on onions too. So I can grow, sweetcorn, potatoes, lettuce, kohl rabi, carrots, peas, beans, cucumber, courgettes, kale, beetroot, tomatoes, apples, pears, gooseberries, autumn raspberries but never prolifically.
@barry island , hello , every year seems different , you certainly grow a good variety
Sprouts usually do well but not this year , parsnips & leeks are doing ok Runner beans have only just started to produce Sweetcorn & blackberries where cooked ! I’ve put it down to the extreme weather we had in Lincolnshire
