Sowed some carrots. I know it's not a lot 🤣. Harvested more chard and spinach, I am just amazed at how quick the stuff grows. Also snaffled my 1st pod of broad beans, small but tasty

Broad beans are definitely best picked a bit young, in my view.

    2020

    2021
I kept thinking that things were along way behind, maybe not 🤔 Mind you the plants on the right were Roma, which are short in 2020, but this year are both sides near the door.
  • I'm viewing a couple of plots this Saturday...so excited to have some space to grow some veg away from our home garden.

Being this late in the season and thinking it will take a bit of time to clear it. I've got started some corn, cucumbers and beans and thankfully already had lots of tomatoes, peppers, aubergines and chillies. Also have seed for salad leaves and perpetual spinach.

You'll probably get me asking advice in the near future. It's half a plot so it will be a good learning experience as I get to know the growing conditions. But will make sure to pace myself.

How did you find it when you first started?

I had a full plot and found it hard work but fulfilling after initially thinking "what are you doing this is an impossible task", it took me from the end of July until the end of the year to dig and clean half of the plot, lots of people offered the advice "you're digging that too deep" but I have the compulsion to do things my way as Frank Sinatra sang and by the end of the year I was about exhausted but pleased with my progress and confident that I could handle a full plot. You must do yours your own way so good luck and enjoy the experience.

@amancalledgeorge yes clear a bit , plant it, then the next bit. If you try to do it all in one go, unless you are very fit,  it will end up being a chore, and may put you off.

  • Thanks for the advice and experiences... it's a bit first day at school but totally up for a challenge and the plots are about ten minutes walk from home which will make it easier to keep an eye on things. Let's see what I'll be presented with tomorrow...could be the full on bramble jungle 😂

Hello @amancalledgeorge and welcome to our chat
someone sugested to me to take a tool do a little dig patch see if good soil also check lots of worms as well for good growing conidtions, which way plot facing south is good, what the neighbours plots look like, see if they look inspiring to you not too over grown

Cover some soil with weed membrane the thicker stuff, dod a bit at a time, face the bit you have done not th bit not done - so you can see you have achieved something enjoy looking around and take a camera that helps
what things does the site have? loos, shop, free bark chippings, brambles does mean free fruit
I also took a bit of paper to write down if the plot had extras like green house, shed any fruit trees, compost area, tools
All I got was a field of mostly brambles and grass a free rake nothing else - well the land to grow stuff on

some poppies out on plot now, strawberries nearly red as well
Had first covid jab yesterday lots of pain and not feeling that well

  • I have membrane and lots of cardboard...fingers crossed it won't be too wild. But all very exciting. Will be looking at two plots so hoping one of them is good to accept. Hope the vaccination side effects wear off soon @Gardengirl.. had just a little bit of arm numbness in my first one...second one in a month's time, hoping for same luck.
