@Yviestevie A Shropshire Lad is an amazing rose. Mine is in it's third summer now and is starting to climb well with strong, healthy canes, very few thorns. The flowers on it's first flush were large, a lovely full shape, a pretty pinky / peach colour and a gorgeous strong scent. The flowers lasted well in my south facing garden. Two grown either side of an arch would look wonderful, treat yourself tomorrow to the roses, the arch can wait if need be until the end of season sales.
@Allotment Boy, l have new this year Tess of the Durbavilles too, from bare root though. It's leafed up well and its first buds are forming. I can't wait to see it in bloom. I want to get Austins Gabriel Oak next, the colour and form are beautiful.
I went to an open gardens weekend a few weeks ago in a nearby (ish) village. Eleven gardens to view for a fiver, bargain. My hubby came too, first time ever. His eyes were opened to how other people garden, he has always called me a plant addict and has said l have too many pots / plants etc. Now he thinks I'm not too bad after all and has stopped rolling his eyes when l arrive home with a new plant. He even asked if l needed anything new for the garden the other day, like an obelisk for those "climby flowering thingys", clematis to you and l.
Oh well, I knew it was a lost cause. I came back with rose Shropshire Lad and two lavenders. When I got home I order two iris ensata Rose Queen which I had seen at Wollerton Old Hall (photo on the garden visits thread). I could have spent a fortune at DAustin, thank God I haven't got a large garden.
I'm so lucky, 5 years ago I moved house and acquired a garden full of plants I didn't like, so every year I have cleared an area and re-planted it. I still have gaps to fill in my rainbow border, and soon I'll be starting on a long border which had an escallonia hedge in it. I plan to fill it with native hedgerow shrubs and wildish flowers. But my plant buying is fairly restrained. I decide what I want in a particular place and then shop online for it. It helps that I don't have a car, as so many GCs are inaccessible without one, so that limits my scope for impulse buying.
Went to Homebase this morning to buy a bag of Vermiculite (l know they're not the cheapest, but that was the destination on offer, so l took it). Hadn't even got in the door before there were 2 packs of calibrachoa in the trolley (BOGOF). Ended up with a pot (£4), small cordyline (£3), and a campanula (£3) as well. Only consolation is that at least l also remembered to buy the Vermiculite 😁
Been caught out by Secret Gardening Club again. I posted a 20% discount code on the Secret Garden thread for someone to use. Someone did use it so they sent me another discount code to thank me. I thought it would be rude not to have a little look and ended up putting 7 Blue Delphiniums in my basket. Came to pay and I closed the site down. No I'm going to be strong and not buy them. The b**g*rs sent me a reminder saying that I had left something in my basket and my resistance crumbled.
Lol @Yviestevie, l keep telling you, resistance is futile 😁. Now remember, you will post a discount code on the thread. It is possible that you will receive another discount code in due course. Delete the email. Do not open it. Do not go onto the SGC website. Be rude. If you ignore this advice it is not my responsibility. 🤞
@Orchidia I got 3 Excaliber (light blue) and 4 Bluebird (mid blue). @AnniD If they send me another discount I might need to come online and seek help!!
