....is anyone growing 'Jude The Obscure' please? if so, how well does it repeat? do you have any blooms on it this autumn?  thanks...  I've heard the repeat is poor and I was thinking of getting one...
Hi Marlorena, I have a JTO which was planted bare root last November. It is currently flowering.

...I've just ordered Jude and England's Rose which I thought I would try out... I've heard good and not so good about that one...
...incidentally, if anybody wants to order from Harkness Roses, I can tell you that they are very prompt... I got an email today advising my bare root order had been despatched - I only ordered a couple of weeks ago... which is quite early but fine with me...  they are first off the mark it seems for bare roots... so their service has been rather good so far...

  • I got Jude the obscure in may earlier this year and it’s planted in the garden now and it still has a couple of buds on it today but the flowers this summer have nearly always got ruined by the rain which affects them badly or just went over quickly in any case!! It has a really nice scent tho and will surely improve as it gets older for me!!

ive had a look at Harkness roses several times before but it’s one of the few rose sites I’ve never really found anything that I like tbh!!

Esme  very nice... does your rose have carmine pink edging on the back of the petals by any chance?  it will be rather feint...

@Marlorena until you asked I never noticed it seems to have a pink streak on the back of the outside petals but the rain has rather ruined the last bloom so can't tell about the inner.

@K67 ...thanks for getting back... I thought as much... I don't think it's a new rose but I hope it does well for you....

I got an email from David Austin to say that my order would be dispatched soon - very exciting.

@Marlorena - I saw Armada in the garden at Burton Agnes, they sell them there too. It reminded me of a post you did sometime ago comparing the shape of the flower to Spanish helmets.

Another one they had that I noticed was Adam Messerich - which reminded me of Royal Jubilee, the shade of pink was similar and so is the scent, very fruity. That one has been flowering every time we’ve visited. Large shrub, very old judging by the thickness of the canes.

I pruned the roots of Kew Gardens when I planted it last winter, because I couldn’t be bothered to dig a hole deep enough for them - All the others were against walls so they were going in at an angle anyway so the roots fit in a shallower hole.

@Mr. Vine Eye … interesting post... nice to know Armada gets about, and delighted you managed to see something in it as I do..
...I used to have Adam Messerich, beautiful pink flower but I only got one bloom in the first year, and I couldn't detect any scent unfortunately... I didn't keep it, but I wish I did..
… looks like they're getting the bare roots out early this year... which is good for those of us who like to get ahead...

  • I should be getting my first delivery today which is exciting, from Trevor White who I haven't used before.

I did order them super-early but thought I had until November to move stuff around and prep the planting area so an industrious weekend ahead😀
