@Marlorena how often do you feed your roses and what type of fertilizer do you use ?

    @kaperna

.. Thank you for asking this question...
...I feed all my roses twice a season.. a few long flowering ones I will give a 3rd feed in August.. otherwise early March and mid June are the feed times I do..

.. I use various fertilizers according to what I have available... any rose fertz. will do the job, or even all purpose shrub fertilizer... but my favourite when I can get it is the David Austin Rose Fertilizer.. my local supplier no longer stocks it..  I try to use organic based for in ground roses... brands like Vitax organic and Westland rose fertilizers are my other favourite ones...  Toprose if I have nothing else but it's not top of my list..

@gutties earlier asked about problems with aphids..  here are some of mine today..  I shall do nothing to them, many of my roses are similarly covered like these..  for strong growing roses this is not a problem..

..lots of these around today, but never enough..

    Thanks Marlorena,

I just measured my two Munsteads too, a bit smaller than my guestimate, one is 40cm and the other 45cm. It was meant to be a trio but a deep rock got in the way. I guess they are just taking their time compared to the others... not a problem really, as they are near the front of the border, just curious. Wild Rover is about 30cm high, there are wire supports just above it, I plan to try and train it as a short climber, so looking forward to those long shoots!

I like my G. Jekyll pot too, thanks, its a good deep one. I put a little fence in front of it in summer as even with the shade of the hedge, it gets too hot.

What’s wrong with Top Rose? if you dont mind me asking.

I read in The Rose Expert book that it’s apparently based on the Original ‘Tonks formula’ (no idea what significance that had)... 🙂

Like most things from Bayer, It's not organic based.. I use it for potted roses where organics are wasted..  and if I've nothing else available then I still use it... it used to be a fertilizer of choice years ago, but I feel it's been very much superseded these days, especially if garden health is taken into account...

Cold here today... mid 40's and frost at night.. this morning my bird bath was frozen over... so nothing will open in these conditions... I expect my first blooms next week with temps low 60's and milder nights...  even so this will be earlier than I've had them before apart from greenhouse roses which are usually a week or two ahead...

The weather overall has been so wrong this past 12 months.. I don't like complaining about dry weather, but I've had no rain in ages.. none on the horizon.. and my very hard tap water is just no good for roses without some amendment...

Perhaps May will be a washout... but at least the roses will be in bloom...

Hope not I'm on hols then @Marlorena.😮
  • My roses still slowly growing atm but should shoot away a lot more when temperatures improve next week.

the waiting takes so long haha and I will surely get used to it each year!!

my morning mist rose has shot away more than most this spring but then again it will be the largest of all my roses when full size!

@Marlorena - hi, I planted Royal Jubilee this year at your recommendation. Do the blooms open to reveal stamen?

Ive been looking at photos of the flowers online and most look very densely packed with petals, but I think I spotted one photo that appeared to show Royal Jubilee blooms open, loose double, with golden stamen inside, which looked very pretty.

However I'm not certain whether this could be a mixed up photo with the wrong name tagged to it which sometimes happens on google image searches.

If so, do bees like them? It's not mentioned on the David Austin website.

I know you grow it so wondered if you could enlighten me? Thanks!

EDIT: I actually found more than one photo this time
