This is my fav rose of all - something that could be punk Niphetos (hard as nails). It lives well - beautiful bud, flower, over-blow and death. Astonishing pale yellow scent. Why do yellow roses smell so very yellow?

Does yellow have an aroma?  Is it thought association perhaps - yellow=lemon ? Whatever, that rose is perfect.

Thank you. To me, yellow roses do indeed smell yellow. No lemon.

Tiny Garden Girl, B3 & Fire, thanks for your suggestions and I really don't know if the rose had a fragrance.  I am intolerant to scents including those on plants, so I don't normally sniff them in case I start with a bout of sneezing. It was a perfect rose - which stood out as all the others were blemished and fighting for their lives.

@Safflower, my Gertrude gets bad blackspot. Because it has an upright habit (mine wants to climb) I find it gets quite congested in the middle and I think the subsequent lack of airflow exacerbates the problem. This winter I am going to cut a third of its canes right down to thin it and try and open it up a bit. Won’t help just now, but you could try that too. As well as keep it well watered and fed, picking off diseased leaves and clearing any fallen ones from underneath, scrape away (and dispose of) the top inch or so of soil and re mulch with an ericaceous compost - especially useful of you have alkaline soil, but seems to do them good anyway.

@Guernsey Donkey2 I wondered if it was Dublin Bay too, it is recommended as a pillar or obelisk rose, I think because it has strong upright canes - was it growing up fairly straight or had more pliable stems wound around the structure?

@Fire, I have actually detected a fragrance on my Golden Celebration this year, smell of a fresh, crisp sunny morning but there is something citrusy in there.
My yellow Julia Child is meant to smell of musk, I wonder of that would smell ‘yellow’ to you too? Perhaps you have a touch of Synesthesia?!
