Me too, except for the size of plant!

This is the Malvern Hills. We have been in this cottage less than a year and I don't know when it was last pruned properly. I cut quite a bit off early this year, I could walk upright under it then, now I have to stoop quite low. It's on an arch and is about 4m high and 4m wide. As it's repeat flowering I don't know what to do about pruning it. Should I just dead head it now, cutting about a foot off each flower cluster? Underneath is a mass of tangled twigs.

Oh gosh, I would find that to be out of hand... if it was mine I would have to cut it back hard, even losing any current flowers or new buds... removing all dead wood and taking it right back to the main framework on the arch... massive thinning out on that one... but you might not want to be so drastic... I like to keep things under control … eventually someone is going to have to take the loppers to it to reduce it..

Thank you Marlorena. I will be wielding loppers when I've finished the bed I'm sorting.

Rosa Bonica makes such a pretty picture with the acid green of Alchemilla mollis and Euphorbia
