Oh thanks for that @Marlorena, 6' tall! That is a bit much, I would have to keep it smaller or swap the planting around as I intended it for close to front of border.
I particularly wanted a rose of that colour, so a shame it hasn't got amazing scent but maybe worth it if it is a good rose? I saw Dioressence on I think, Style's website but didn't end up buying it and have also been looking at one called Magenta, similar colours.
With all the talk about Munstead Wood being so thorny, its putting me off a bit ( I'm bit clumsy and prone to injuring myself🙄) love the idea of the colour and scent. 🤔 Maybe I should go for the orange Sparkle instead.🤔
I don't know 'Sparkle' or 'Dioressence' but I have grown 'Magenta' twice... the pros and cons with Magenta are these.... the scent is fabulous... it's an old rose damask fragrance that is unusual in a floribunda rose of this type... it does also have great lavender pink colourations...
..the cons are that it's not the easiest rose to grow and needs generous manure and feeding... although we probably do that anyway... but it wouldn't be as carefree as CRM... Magenta also turns rather pink in hot weather and the lavender shades are lost at such times...
I mentioned earlier I had ordered some Spring bulbs from Dutch supplier Farmer Gracy... I ordered on the 4th Nov... they were despatched on the 5th and I received them yesterday the 12th.... all top quality bulbs, in a box well packaged in separate labelled bags... so I can recommend them... allow 1 week for delivery [Hermes courier].... good website, easy to order from.. and no hassles...
...these roses came today from Beales roses... they prune them back and trim the roots, so these are the smallest I've had so far... and I would like to have seen an extra cane on the left one, which is a new rose 'Liverpool Hope'.... possibly they don't have enough budwood for extra canes at this stage... but it could be better... the right one is quite good...
I need another rose 'fix' so I've just ordered 3 roses from Roseraie Ducher in France... I've got roses from them before and they were all top quality, using laxa rootstock, same as we do here... I ordered today.... 'Florence Ducher' a climber.... 'Mme. Didier le Prado' a modern shrub and 'Boufarik'.. a Damask rose of old...
@Marlorena I like how not having space for new roses doesn't stop you
Do you know more about 'Boufarik'? I can't find it anywhere under this name.
I dug out Gentle Hermione (not doing well) from my front garden today and planted it in a pot. It has a very undeveloped root system, smaller than many of my new bare roots. I am not completely sure why - the area is west facing so maybe too much shady for her and windy, there were some competing phormium roots and the soil could be better (deeper) prepared but not too bad, no obvious junk there. I guess it could be the combination of these, rather than one big reason why it didn't thrive. I wouldn't be surprised if it does better in a pot (placed in sunny and sheltered location) than it did there.
"Sparkle" ( has also Frymerlin in brackets) is hybrid tea and "Sunfire" is a floribunda of Cants of Colchester both orange @Marlorena . This is the only place I have seen my "Sheila's Perfume " ( Harsherry) which I am contemplating getting another one of. Plus a climbing white of some description. I have seen Sparkle in the flesh and was impressed by the colour.
Even though I am still digging the new rose bed, I am getting really impatient to get my bare root roses now, not due until the end of November. Also, because I was worried about the species tulips coming when it was too hot, I asked Peter Nyssen to delay delivery of my bulb order until the first week of December. Given we had our first major frost a few days ago, a bit over-cautious perhaps!
I do have one or two to order from Peter Beales. Does anyone know if they do discounts on bare root roses at any point?
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Ironically the only rose that’s nicked me enough for a proper “Ouch!” was Ghislaine de Feligonde, which is thornless on the stems and just prickly on new growth. But it kept catching me with the claws on the underside of the leaves!
Other ones that are very thorny like Amber Queen haven’t been an issue - probably because I’m expecting them to be thorny so am more careful.
Ive put Munstead wood in a position where it hopefully shouldn’t be catching me too often.
My last lot of DA roses have arrived. I’ve left them in the packaging and put them in the shed as I won’t be able to plant them til Friday afternoon.
