To encourage basal shooting they ought to be kept now in coolish conditions - c. 10°C.

I’m increasing my stock from cuttings taken two weeks ago from overwintered (but uncosseted) plants. I will have to wait for at least two weeks more to see if they have taken. There are around 30 in the greenhouse.

Red Velour however will be confined this year to a corner of my garden. The principal display area is going to be Beautical petunias in a blend of cream, caramel and cinnamon - which sounds more like a recipe rather than a colour scheme. I’ll post photos in mid summer.

  • Thank you everybody for your encouragement and advice. I have never grown petunia from seed so a lot to learn still.
I do bring the little seedlings out for them to get some sunshine, so they can catch up on the growth.
Really looking forward to them growing quickly  and starting flowering - 3ft would be amazing, though they will have to grow down from a hanging basket, they probably won’t have enough support to climb up where I’m planning for them to grow. Or maybe I can clip them on to the hanging basket hook...
Would five plants be sufficient to fill a good size hanging basket?

5 would be more than ample. As a former gardener of mine used to say, they grow like billy goats.

Have you scrolled back through the pages to see the photos? With support they easily grow upwards, without they tumble well.

  • Like billy goats sounds perfect! 😊
The pictures of your red ones from last year were my inspiration for this experiment @BenCotto
Looking forward to everybody’s new pictures. As I have a mix, hopefully I will be able to show them in different colours.
22 degrees are expected for tomorrow, that should give them a boost 🤞

Could I take cuttings from this petunia seedling or is it too small still? @BenCotto

I'm looking forward to your updates on these.

I successfully (kind of) overwintered mine under fleece outside but took it off too soon or the move to another part of the garden upset them. Or something. And after all that, they recently died. (Successfully over-wintered Cobea also just went to the great greenhouse in the sky). :s

I'm planting seeds again - going from scratch.

I’m sorry to hear that @Fire. I was looking forward to seeing your cobaea in its second year. It’s very frustrating when you get plants through the worst of the weather only to see them dying in spring.

From a packet of petunia seeds I only have three plants, the rest failed to germinate. I’ve taken three cuttings from the plant pictured above and they look healthy, but it’s too early to tell probably.

I’m not growing cobaea this year, I’ve bought a climbing gloriosa lily and I’m hoping that will be nice, but I’m still waiting for it to shoot.

Thanks @pitter-patter . " Climbing gloriosa lily". Wow, it looks amazing.

I've over winter quite a lot from last year and they are flowering now . Didn't do anything special shoved them in a pot and forgot about them.

I think its a tad to small yet @pitter-patter but the one of the right is big enough or nearly.

I’ve only just seen this and agree with Perki’s assessment but would also do the shoot at the back and the one in the left. Nearly three weeks on from your posting I would expect you now to have plenty more shoots you might harvest for cuttings.
