That helps thanks...as it rules out many of the plants already suggested.... eg Syringa pinnatifolia. Interesting.....Maybe Polylepis australis? Bark fits. Pinnate leaves fit. Would explain why you have never seen flowers.

It was sheltered there. Wish I had discovered that at the start . Truly appreciate everyone trying and people on here are special!!!
