Anyone done any gardening today? Part 5

  • Hi LIzz\ie,
I put my bulb onto water because when I peeled the wax from it the leaves of the bulb were so dehydrated I felt it needed water. The bulb base is only just on the surface of the water so I am not drowning it. It already has a huge flower bud plus a second one growing so I plan to pot it in compost when I have bought some compost. It is on a cool window sill now safely out of the way of the animals. Did you manage to get yours to flower? Did you just bin it rather than fuss over yours like I am with mine?

I thought we were going to have some respite from the weather today, there were patches of blue sky and the sun was trying to break through the clouds but it has started raining again. It was abysmal yesterday. The adits and gullies going down to the sea are thundering with torrents of water, with sewage warnings on beaches for field run off. It wont be long before we have another hose pipe ban enforced, unbelievable.

I have had only one @Joyce Goldenlily, given to me as a present and as I wasn't too keen on it and couldn't be bothered to keep it, I just binned it.

We have had glorious weather here so I've done two stints in the garden today. Swept the storm debris off the drive and cut back more soggy perennials then went back out after lunch to put netting over more  emerging crocuses and cut off plastic milk bottles over smaller clumps, hoping to foil the squirrels.

    Hope your weather improves soon.

  • Too wet and windy here. Not a chance tomorrow, so maybe early next week. Weather permitting!!
  • We were forecast showers yesterday, humph! Very long heavy downpours more like. Today looks more promising, it is not raining. Yet. The gale has subsided and there is a lot of blue sky at the moment. Thermals at the ready as it is decidedly colder.
    No gardening.
My daughter gave me my amaryllis so I have to be careful. She has one herself so we can compare notes. Mine is now just over a foot tall from the tip of the first bud to the bottom of the stem at the neck of the bulb. The leaves are greener and less dehydrated since it was given water, no idea what colour the flower will be yet.

Finally!  A day without rain (so far).  We are replacing a long line of fencing in the coming weeks so I need to clear everything nearby away before then.  We want to get the new fences in before new growth begins.

Got out at last and did some very needed weeding in the so called herb garden! Pollarded some sallows. Potted up some fritillaries having bought them for a £1. Will wait to see growth before planting them out (we always loose them if planted out directly, so trying a different approach).

Well I’ve been in the garden. The sun was out for few hours so that was a much needed tonic.

I just topped the bird feeders, cleared leaves from the mini pond connected to main pond (the frogs will be spawning in there next month) and had a wander. I spotted bluebells coming up (non native unfortunately, but still a dash of colour to look forward too), my foxgloves have survived the year and look healthy (will flower this year) and some other bulbs peeping are up too.

Dry and grey here, the calm before the storm. We're expecting 6-12 inches of snow overnight and into tomorrow; I pounded a stake into the pasture where I can see it from a window and lashed a yard stick to it, so I can take snow measurements from the house.  When I took down the Christmas tree last week I replaced it with my grow light shelving system, so I've started some perennial seeds and am stratifying some for starting next month.

@CrankyYankee , hello , would rather have snow than this heavy rain , centre of village flooded again and I’ve had to dig a trench to take sewage water to stream at side of garden

Went to allotment today , pleased to say where mine is it OK , it drains well , centre flooded and bottom of site saturated , unworkable

Go 3 bushes to plant at home but garden to wet

Not today, although I did meet a friend at a GC and snapped up a lot of gardening sundries bargains - does that count?
On second thoughts, I did a bit of gardening when I got home. Placed the three new plastic cloches I'd just bought over emerging clumps of crocuses in the front garden as a squirrel deterrent!
