Back from a weekend away, I just had time this afternoon to walk round the garden and take photos of some roses still in bloom - not many left now. Also picked a handful of raspberries for a pud.

  • My sister has just picked her crop of hazelnuts. I told my non gardener new neighbour that her hazel nuts would be ready for picking, and she asked what to do with them. Several years ago my previous neighbour planted a twisted hazel between us when she thought her husband was going to cut down an ash tree in the same corner.

I am still ripening tomatoes in the greenhouse so unable to start cleaning yet. The Ozark tomatoes have finished so I have cut the vines down but the Big Mama's and Cocktail Crush still have quite a few fruits on them which are still turning colour. It is surprising how hot it still gets in the greenhouse.

I have decided to dip my toe into charcuterie by salting some pork belly to use in a cassoulet using salt pork and duck. Has anyone tried their hand at salting etc.? I am not planning on exploring smoking yet. I have brined a fresh tongue for our Christmas table which was very successful. The local butcher at Heligan had a bit of a problem getting his head around a strange biddy asking for a fresh tongue rather than one of his prepared ones.

Just weeded the wall raised bed in the back garden which was the last one to be done.

Now to start all over again in the front garden!

Sorry, no experience into charcuterie @Joyce Goldenlily so can't help you there.

  • I'm finally moving plants out of their "temporary" holding beds and creating new permanent garden beds.  After 3 years, some of the perennials have serious root systems!  I nearly destroyed a raised bed trying to pry the elecampane out of a corner - the root ball was almost the size of a basketball. I've finished one split bed with a diagonal path, all hot colored plants.  I can't wait to see it next year, right now it's a mess.

  • I managed to do an hour and a half of work in the garden, cutting back brambles growing out of a stone wall. They were over the path, rooting as they headed for the house. I also began to clear the dog's pee corner where he nips out last thing at night before retiring. I watched his reaction when he saw my handiwork. Not particularly impressed, he just peed on the bucket I had used to put the brambles in.
I picked some tomatoes and apples.
When I have finished clearing the path along the wall I have to go down to the bottom of the garden and cut back the nettles so that I can reach the other apple tree and collapsed fruit cage.

I brushed down the paving on one side of the house prior to watering in some paving cleaner I had left over. It was warm and sunny today so I'm hoping it won't rain tomorrow. It's an experiment to see if it delays the algae on the paving we always get on the shady sides of the house.

    Took longer than I anticipated.

  • What a glorious day for gardening. Unfortunately, by the time I had finished pottering around doing jobs indoors my back was aching so much I could not face doing any gardening so sat in the conservatory and read.
Hoping to make it today, after I have been for my Covid and flu jabs.

Hello , have been able to do some gardening most days this week , lots of little jobs done which seem to take up lots of time , so very pleased

Have moved 3 self seeded bushes to bottom hawthorn hedge , where some box had died
Today , planted 3 saucer shaped pots with polyanthus we got yesterday from a local garden centre
And finished cleaning greenhouse glass , putting bubble rap up on one side so far , will finish in the week
This morning went to allotment , having a day there tomorrow

  • Yes, been out in the shed. With a potential move on the cards, I've been clearing stuff that's been hanging around for years, and really needs to go (according to my wife), so dozens of plastic pots have been put for recycling, many more thrown away, pieces of wood disposed of, old pots of paint gone, several planters cleaned and offered to friends (and taken), and so much more!! And still the shed looks full.
No tools parted with yet. They are old friends - some were wedding gifts from the 1980's.
However, the council will come and take away an old lawn mower, table and freezer.

And there's more work to be done.
Been painting the fence, just to use up the paint.
I dislike throwing stuff out. So much might come in useful one day.🙄

Watered what is left in the greenhouse, and picked the last cucumber. Lots outside to do, now the green bin is empty. Then went for flu jab, hope arm isn't too sore to work tomorrow.
