Sunshine and blue sky this morning so I've been doing leaf clearing off one of my main big borders. A big maple tree is overhead and dropped the lot in the cold spell. I've got lots of small bulbs in that bed and didn't want them to be smothered. Really enjoyed being outside, it hit nearly 12c so was warm enough.
I've cut back Verbena, Heleniums, Rudbeckia & shredded down. Then gathered up the squidged Nasturtiums and the whole lot went on the compost heap (which I'd turned & watered this morning). Only 8°C & occasional spots of rain but nice to be out and doing a bit.
Clay soil - Cheshire/Derbyshire border. I play with plants and soil and sometimes it's successful
Picked up 6 Helleborus niger 'Christmas Carol' from ALDI a couple of days ago. I'll plant them out now i can see bare ground.
I finally got round to planting mine today (I bought them several weeks ago). Two are temporarily in a big pot by the front door with a small Pinus glauca conica (£6 from The Range), a small variegated Skimmia and a small Gaultheria.
Doncaster, South Yorkshire. Soil type: sandy, well-drained
Not exactly gardening but filled the bird feeder with suet pellets and fat balls. Washed and refilled the niger seed feeder and the feeder which sticks to the window, with suet pellets. I have run out of birdseed. I coiled and hung up the hose, shouldn't need it for a week or two! Collected kitchen veg. waste, and previous waste waiting to be taken down to the compost heap and duly put everything onto a very much smaller compost heap, it has dropped in height quite significantly. It was very satisfying to be outside for a while, quite mild but very soggy.
