As it's raining cats n' dogs (below I'll tell ya a little story on where the saying comes from) and I'm also lucky enough that I don't work Mondays, I'll be reading up Carol Klein's lovely book on growing your own fruit and veg that I purchased from the dreaded 'middle aisle' of Lidl would you believe, you know the one where you go 'ohh I need that' and 'oooh that's handy' and around £50 later at the till. I'll be jotting down in my grow diary and panicking about not being able to plant out my Cucamelon's until the following weekend. I had help from fellow plotters planting some peppers, cabbage, tomatoes and beans this weekend but with my concern on my soil condition I'll also be panicking on whether they do well but all done with a lovely pot of tea of course.

Comes from homes with a thatched roof that were quite common back in the old days. Cats and other small animals would hide and nestle inside the beams and when it rained heavily, they would jump down or out to take shelter.
Mix 2tbsp of white, granulated sugar with 1tbsp of water and place on a spoon for a Bee to reach. Sometimes they're too exhausted to reach back to the hives when it's hot and dry.
The nearly finished green bin project - can't believe it took me a week to do this job must be old age creeping up. Oh, and the new fences, a big improvement.
Well done Lizzie, I sense a great achievement for your efforts. Interesting reading your plug plant wild area hippophae. I did a similar thing over the last Autumn/Winter/Spring. We dug over an unused grassy area and I grew and planted out approx. 40 plugs. This is how it looked in May, we are so pleased with the result.Today I transplanted a few Lily of the Valley, repotted a Rosemary, and showed a group of Botanists around our field and this patch above. I have a few pictures and some new names of grasses to add to my list.
That's looking good @Lizzie27 ( like the fence, very nice ! and all your hard work as well of course), and @Guernsey Donkey2, it's nice when all those plug plants do their thing !
@Hippophae where did you get the plug plants from? all looks good
Hi Gardengirl.. (Hope it is okay with the forum admins to post these details)... I bought the plugs online from a website called www.wildflowers.uk, but there are a number of British companies offering similar wildflower plugs and different types of meadow seed mixes on their websites. I bought half trays of three different plug plant categories each consisting of 52 plugs, because I like to mix it up. Must say that all of the plants arrive in good condition except for the four small teasel plants who’s stems had snapped somewhere on route, but I still planted them and am keeping fingers crossed that new stems will arise from the root stocks. Cost me about £150 in total so works out roughly at around a pound per plug. I know it comes across expensive, but rather than the uncertainty of starting with seeds you are assured of plants that will survive to a flowering size (as long as they are watered sufficiently until established) and then these plants should lead to the production and dispersion of more seeds and therefore continued successive generations of plants. So a worthwhile investment in my opinion.
