It took many years before I got cauli growing 'right' @Lizzie27 :)
I don't envy you the ivy job!  I've got that to come on a 40ft stretch of partially collapsed wooden fence.  You can't actually see any of the fence now!
A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

I'm so glad I haven't got 40 ft to do!

  • I cleared some blanket weed from the pond, taking care to return the baby newts to the water.  I collected some corn cockle seeds and with the help of my OH adjusting it I managed to open the field gate on my own, it was too stiff before for me to manage.

Been too wet to do much recently but, looking at the forecast, the next few days will be dry. Got two pallets to convert into a cold frame and need a new (bigger) cage to protect a veg patch. The shed, two planters and fencing needs painting. Oh, and digging out a new border and the mowing. I can feel some back ache coming on!

Picked some green beans for dinner.. boiled in a pan of salted water until 'al dente', with a pat of butter and pepper for the table.  Even my picky six year old ate a serving spoon full.  Also made a salad from yellow summer squash and a tiny courgette, along with some cherry tomatoes.  Tomatoes are only just getting going, so I supplemented the handful with some from the shop.

Yesterday I planted some peas in hopes of a second crop.  I've never tried it before.. usually the beds are too full by this stage of the year.. but the direct sown okra didn't get much past germination seed leaves and failed to survive.. so I have a small spot for them.  Just using some spare tomato cages for support and planted them in a circle like sweat peas.

Cucumbers did poorly this spring, and I ended up having to re-sow two hills completely and add a few seeds to the other two.  They are clomping along now and are two or three days away from our first crop.  My boys love them, they are a twice a day guest to our meals this time a year.

I've officially become a fanatic. OH up early for the return to work so I was collecting slugs and snails at 5.30am!

  • Catching up with yesterday... Took my trusty rechargeable shears out, sat on the grass clearing all the tall grass and nettles around me then shuffling along. I have cleared all the area next to the new border and it looks grand, and it was sunny with a sweet breeze, gazing at the ocean in between sweeps.

I'm sorry but I wouldn't get anything done with your views @islandanchoress 😍

How I wish I could grow brassica like you @BobTheGardener Failed miserably twice with broccoli, don't  have a good record with onions either.🙄
